Paul Frederick Youngdahl

CARMEL – Paul F. Youngdahl passed away September 10, 2014 at the age of 92.

Beloved husband, father and grandfather, Paul is survived by his loving wife and companion of 70 years, Elinor; son Mark Youngdahl (Barbara); daughters Marcia Saurman and Melinda Araujo; and grandchildren Paul Araujo (Sarah) and Leticia Araujo.

Paul was born in Brockway, PA and attended the University of Michigan, graduating with MS and PhD degrees in Mechanical Engineering. During WWII he served in the U.S. Navy aboard the battleship USS Iowa. He and Elinor were married November 27, 1943.

Paul served on the faculty of the University of Michigan from 1949 to 1974, becoming a full professor in 1962. During his distinguished teaching career he was also a visiting professor at the University of California, Berkeley; and Stanford University. Paul was a proud member of Tau Beta Pi, the engineering honor society; and Phi Kappa Phi, the national honor society; and was recognized by "Who's Who in America."

In 1973 Paul and Elinor moved to California, making Palo Alto their home for 30 years. During this time Paul built an independent consulting business and became a renowned expert witness in product liability; recognized around the world. In 2004 Paul and Elinor moved to Carmel, making Del Mesa Carmel their home. They were members of the Church of the Wayfarer.

Possessed by a remarkable intellect and keen wit, Paul was the embodiment of the true engineer but was always willing to play along with his less scientific friends. He was greatly loved by all who knew him and will be dearly missed for his gentle, kind and generous spirit.
