Peter Cannon Obituary

Peter Cannon
Peter passed away peacefully March 19, 2025. He was born March 25, 1933, and raised in Virginia and North Carolina. He is survived by his niece, Allison Blackman of Falls Church, Virginia, and his nephew, Colin Cannon of Nogal, New Mexico, and four grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
From a young age, Peter enriched his life with an interest in the arts. During his high school years, he participated in music and drama activities, playing piano and acting in school plays. At age eighteen, he made his professional stage debut in a starring role in a Plymouth, Massachusetts' summer stock production of Eugene O'Neill's "Ah, Wilderness!." Moving shortly thereafter to New York City, he toured the country in a production of "Mister Roberts" before being drafted into the army in the early 1950's and sent to Korea. Before his deployment, he met Frank Graham, who was to become his life partner. Upon Peter's discharge from the Army, Peter and Frank settled in New York City until 1970, when they moved to their "country home" in upstate New York. They ultimately moved to San Francisco in 1981, where they enjoyed the city's cultural events, such as concerts in Stern Grove, and productions of the San Francisco Opera. Peter participated in several operas as a supernumerary.
After Frank died in 2000, Peter continued to find joy in the arts, attending ACT plays, and holding season tickets to both the San Francisco Opera and the San Francisco Ballet. He cherished his friends, and loved celebrating life's milestones with them, often renting homes in Sonoma, California to afford a space for everyone he loved to be together. He will be remembered for his warmth, his care, his diligence, but mostly for the profound joy he brought to the friends who loved him. A memorial service will be held at Duggan's Funeral Service, 3434 17th Street, San Francisco, California, on Thursday morning, April 3, 2025, at 10:00 am.

Peter and his lifetime partner, Frank, hold very special memories for me and mutual friends. We often gathered to celebrate birthdays in restaurants or picknicked in local parks. We always enjoyed their great sense of humor and warmth. Peter will be greatly missed.

Pete lived with joy, kindness, and unwavering truth. He inspired those who knew him to be themselves. In his honor, I give to Lambda Legal, so others may live as freely as he did.
