Phyllis Pollack Obituary

Phyllis Addison Pollack Woman with a Flair Phyllis Addison Pollack, Master Flower Arranger who created artistic floral designs for the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art, The Arts Guild of Sonoma and many private galleries, offices and homes, died peacefully in her sleep on January 3rd. She was 91. Born Phyllis Joyce Addison in Victoria B.C., Canada in 1919, she studied and excelled in Ballet at a young age. In 1939, she left home to perform with the Taynton Dancers, a Ballet Troupe within the traveling Marcus Show. After residencies in Los Angeles, Mexico City at the Palacio de Belles Artes and Havana, Cuba the troupe disbanded and Phyllis remained in Havana to dance as a soloist with the Ballets Russes which had gone on strike during the war. It was there she met her husband, Robert S. Pollack, a Cornell University Medical student studying tropical diseases on a summer fellowship. They returned to his hometown New York City and were married until his death 62 years later. The Pollacks moved to San Francisco in 1948 and settled in Hillsborough where they raised four children. In 1970 they moved to San Francisco and later retired in Sonoma. Phyl was a long-term member of Ikebana International and the Metropolitan Club. She was trained as a docent at the DeYoung Museum and completed her 5th certificate of the Sogetsu School of Ikebana of Japan. She and her husband who was a visiting surgeon and professor traveled to 40 countries on five continents. Known for her elegance and theatrical style, Phyllis is survived by four children, a son "R" Addison of Wyoming, 3 daughters, Gwenda Joyce of Sonoma, Victoria Addison Rowe of Santa Fe, Phyllis Addison-Foster of San Rafael and six grandchildren. I did not meet Phyllis Pollack in her life, but I am now living in her Sonoma home, and enjoying the use of her beautiful studio where she created so many beautiful floral arrangements. One day, by chance, when I was thinking about moving back to Sonoma after having lived here 42 years, I walked into their Sonoma home before it went on the market to be sold by the then owners. I immediately felt a strong kinship with the property. The next day I learned that Robert and Phyllis Pollack were the first owners of this house, and that they had added on her beautiful studio. Their connection to the property was an amazing fact to me, as Dr. Pollack was my father's cancer doctor and surgeon for the last five years of my father's life. On learning this I immediately put in an offer to buy this home. Their presence is palpable here, and I am honored to carry forth my admiration for what they created. I feel very close to them and their connection to my father and our family. We named our beloved dog "Polly" in honor of Dr. Pollock. I wish I could meet some of their children some day. I think Phyliss and Robert would be pleased to know their legacy continues here through my life and art in their studio, and my gratitude for Dr. Pollack's care of my father.

Tony,
I found your message today and sent a message saying we know about Frank Baxter Morris and would love to know more about his Father, but that message wasn't posted to this obit site. I have been doing a zoom meeting with US and Canadian cousins each month and you are invited to the next one on Monday, July 26. Please leave a message here and we will figure out how to connect! Dear Tony,
Thank you SO MUCH for writing. I have just seen your message from October 2020! I did not even know this page existed until my daughter shared your message with me today. We do, indeed, know of Frank Baxter Morris and the family legacy however, we do not know much about Frank Baxter and his family so we would be very interested in learning more. I am an American, and during COVID, started a "Cousin Meeting" zoom call with our Canadian cousins and my sisters, so we could get to know one another better. One of our Canadian cousins is an historian and is also the family historian who has updated us. It will be very important to have you fill in some information about our ancestors. Would you like to join the call? It happens on the last Monday of the month which is next Monday! (July 26, 2021.) I have registered for updates on this page so hope to hear back from you. We can find each other on social media and/or I will post my email address here after we make contact. SO HAPPY to hear from you! I go by the name Lis Addison. All the best to you!
