Randy Meek Obituary

Randy Meek
February 25, 1951 - July 31, 2023
Randolph "Randy" Meek passed away peacefully on July 31, 2023, surrounded by family and Hawaiian music gently playing. He will long be remembered with love. Randy was 72.
Randy was born February 25, 1951 in Honolulu, Hawaii to Naomi and Donald Meek at Queens Hospital. In 1957, Donald transferred to Hunters Point Shipyards from Pearl Harbor, relocating to San Francisco with his sons, Randy and his older brother Hamilton (Hammy). They settled on 30th Street, where multiple generations of the Meek Family would live until 2014. Conveniently located up the street from Day Street Park, both brothers engaged in sports and formed life-long friendships there. Randy often described growing up in "the neighborhood" as an idyllic time, when neighbors knew each other by name and kids were able to play outside unsupervised. In fact, it was only by their Dad's whistle that Hammy and Randy knew to make their way back home.
The Meek brothers attended Kate Kennedy, James Lick, and Mission High School. Sports were a lifelong theme in the boys' lives but it was Randy who was often sidelined due to a heart condition caused by Rheumatic Fever. Despite his medical setbacks throughout life, Randy never complained and did not allow them to define him.
Randy often spoke fondly of summers spent employed with SF Park and Rec. as a lifeguard. He worked at various pools around the City, but mainly Hamilton Pool, where he saved 10 kids from drowning one summer.
After graduating from Mission High School in 1969, Randy attended City College where he met Carroll Caruso. They dated and married a few years later, eventually separating but remaining friends. Together they had daughter Shannon and son Ryan, whom he loved dearly. Randy always encouraged their children to try new things at least once and never say, "I can't". He also instilled the importance of family and a strong work ethic. As "the kids" grew older, he enjoyed witnessing their lives unfold with pride. He was a doting Father until the end, reminding them they were good kids, the best.
In 1971, Randy began his 46-year career with PG&E in the gas department and then became an apprentice lineman. He was a member of I.B.E.W Local 1245 since 1972. In 1978, he pursued an apprenticeship to become a cable splicer which he enjoyed the most. In 1996, Randy became a cable night crew foreman. He loved the work but enjoyed the camaraderie of the friendships more. Together time was spent abalone diving along the Mendocino Coast, barbecuing, camping, card playing, and hunting excursions.
The majority of Randy's PG&E employment was working at night while "The City" slept. Night crew meals at favorite spots included Original Joe's on Taylor Street, Bruno's and Sam Wo's. Along with the City's beauty, Randy also enjoyed its nightlife. One night at work, he bumped into Darlene Wolff a former classmate at Mission High School. They soon began dating and married in 2007.
In 2014, Darlene and Randy moved to Brentwood where they enjoyed a new community of friends. Randy savored the comforts of home and filled his days reading assiduously, caring for their dogs Farley and Kona, watching old movies, and Giants, 49ers, PGA and Women's College Basketball. The couple shared a flair for cooking and hosted family dinners often. They enjoyed their retirement together until Darlene's passing in 2022.
Randy is survived by his children Shannon and Ryan, son-in-law Ben Briones Jr., and his faithful companion, Kona. He will truly be missed by his nephew Daniel, sisters-in-law Patricia Meek and Jeanne McManus, extended family and friends.
A special thank you for the outpouring of love and condolences the Meek Family has received. Many thanks to Dr. Khan, Dr. Miri, and the medical staff at Kaiser. Also to Fr. Robert of St. Ignatius Church, Antioch.
Private family services will be held.
Aloha.

Randy was a good friend. We grew up at Day Street Park together along with his brother, (also a good friend of mine) Hamilton.

I will always have fond memories of the days we played a lot of cards, drank beer, watched Sunday football, drank beer, camped together, and drank beer.

My condolences to his family and loved ones. Randy will be missed but great memories will always be with us all.
