REMY CHARLIP Obituary

Remy Charlip
Jan 10, 1929 - Aug 14, 2012
Internationally recognized children's book author, choreographer, artist and teacher Remy Charlip died peacefully on August 14th. He was 83. A founding dancer and designer in the Merce Cunningham company, Remy's dances were performed by The Joffrey Ballet, London Contemporary Dance Theater, and locally by Zaccho/Joanna Haigood, Axis Dance Company, and the Oakland Ballet, among many others. In addition to writing and illustrating more than 35 children's books, Remy co-founded The Paper Bag Player's, the longest-running children's theater in the country. Charlip has been honored with two Village Voice Obie awards and three New York Times Best Illustrated Book of the Year citations. Charlip is known for his creation of a new form of choreography called "airmail dances" - a method that grew from his work with the National Theater for the Deaf. He is survived by an extensive adopted family including June Ekman, Erika Bradfield, and Jules Beckman.
Funeral service and burial will occur Sunday, August 19th, 1:30 pm Fernwood Cemetery (301 Tennessee Valley Road, Mill Valley, CA 94941), followed by a reception, 3:30-6pm at ODC Theater (3153 17th Street San Francisco, CA 94110). All are Welcome.

I remember Remy always saying, "we're playing, not making art." I also remember him keeping his dishes in the oven. Good bye sweet sweet man.

I met Remy Charlip in the 1980's. His generosity was one of his most luminous qualities. His work has delighted and enriched so many. Such originality, and wonder.

I am very very sorry to hear of the passing of Remy. He was a most important teacher to me. I helped as an assistant on preparing the talk for the library of congress and also helped with several picturebooks (Sleepy Time Rhyme and Why I will never...) and finally we did Little old big Beard together- I will never forget his kitchen, the peanutbuttertoast, the laughing and all the arrangements that could be discovered by every opening of a drawer - I can't belive it is all gone. Always planed to visit some day soon. I miss him so much and am so greatful to have learned and worked with him. A candle is burning in our house in Berlin, I tried to arrange the flowers around his picture like he would have done it. Uff - tears falling on my keyboard now. I'm terribly sad - memory will never fade. Please accept my condolences for the loss. Sincerely yours Tamara

He had, in his work for the theater, such a trusting, almost magical sense of the world, underwritten by a skepticism born of experience. His delightful drawings on postcards. . .His personal charm. . .The dance world is much less without him.
