I met Richard in 1966 as a young divorcee raising two bi-racial children in Berkeley; we recognized each other as outsiders and rebels. He often played with my kids, teaching them to tie their shoelaces, then later taking them to the Panther breakfast program. When I had surgery, he babysat.

"To you, Beloved Comrade,
we make this solemn vow:
The fight will go on.
