Richard Cahill Obituary

Richard Francis Cahill 1920 - 2011 Passed away peacefully on the morning of December 12, 2011, at the age of 91 in his family's home in San Francisco. Born in San Francisco on June 25, 1920, he lived most of his life in either San Francisco or Marin County. A graduate of Lowell High School (1937) and of Stanford University (1942), Richard served in the Naval Reserve during World War II, returning home to San Francisco following the war's end. Richard earned a degree in civil engineering in college, and he began his career in 1946 by joining his family's firm, Cahill Construction Company, where he oversaw a myriad of construction projects; his participation in the development and construction of the St. Mary's Cathedral in San Francisco was that which he remembered most fondly. Following his career as a builder, Richard turned his attention to the real estate investments that he and his three brothers (Jack, Bob and Peter) had made over the years. Richard worked alongside his brothers in the family business for over 50 years, and he took satisfaction in observing and participating in the celebration of the construction company's 100 year anniversary this past May. Richard loved the outdoors, spending most of his life playing golf and tennis, as well as hiking and skiing. Richard spent most of his non-working time, whether golfing or skiing, with his beloved wife of 56 years, Shirley, who predeceased him in 2008. Richard is survived by his brother Peter, daughter Sarah, son Patrick and four grandchildren. A memorial service for friends and family will be held on December 19th at St. Mary's Cathedral in San Francisco at 2 p.m. Donations in Richard's honor can be made to: California Pacific Medical Center Foundation Cardiology Fellowship Program 1255 Post Street, Suite 700 San Francisco, CA 94109
