Rico Maximo Obituary

Rico Maximo

"Spend time with your dog, Take a walk on the beach, Appreciate arts and music, Travel with your loved ones, Be kind and help others, And make a toast to enduring friendships.-- that is what Rico would wish for you; because that was how he had lived his life."

On June 7, 2017, Rico passed away in his home near downtown San Francisco, a city he had called home for most of his adult life.

He was 61, survived by his shadow Luigi; his ex-wife of 10 years, a life-long companion Deidra; his devoted friend and employer Merri, his true confidant Carolyn, and his loving siblings, Leslie (Mike), Maydra (Bob), Veronica, Eric, and Patrick.

Like many youths in his generation, Rico left Stockton in his 20's, drawn to the city by its vibrant music scene and the urban life style.

With his quick wit, easy laugh, and stylish charm, he made friends everywhere he went, particularly in North Beach, where he and Luigi had become a neighborhood fixture over the years. You would find Rico cheering in bars during World Cup, chatting with friends on Washington Square, always with Luigi wagging in tow. A perpetual hard worker, Rico was a natural when it came to working with his hands, fixing and installing, tiling and flooring, painting and carpentry. His work was honest and accurate.

Rico was a fan of music icons of his time: The Beatles, Cat Stevens, and Rod Stewart.. Though he did not embrace technology readily, he did marvel the magic of YouTube where he could find any song and watch many great performances by his beloved artists.

Rico also had a diverse interest in English mysteries by Agatha Christie. Proudly he collected European fine arts during his travel; his favorite places were Amsterdam, Spain, and Greece.

Of course he was not without faults. He sometimes had a short temper, stubborn with a cause, and patience was not his virtue. But it was hard to stay mad at him when you knew his generous heart was in the right place. . . .

"No one who has ever touched our hearts can really pass away because some beauty lingers on in each memory of which they have been a part. . . . .Rest in peace, my friend."

Rico Maximo with faithful companion Luigi

My husband Michael and I met you in Washington Square Park in 2011 or 2012, when we had just gotten our dog Bix. You approached us because you had a dog that looked just like ours, and we bonded as we spoke about our beloved dogs and their funny personalities. Your dog was then 6 or 7 while ours was 1 or 2.

Sometimes people come and go in your life in a short span of time, but they make an impact. You were one of those people to us - we met you, you were so humble but you had a sophisticated flair to you, a love of life, and an understanding of what matters. You used to talk about your love of going to Amsterdam or to Spain, and how you enjoyed traveling there. You had a poetry to your philosophy. So full of life once, you're now gone, and it's hard to believe it. Even Luigi still looks for you, though he was with you when you died.

We will always remember you as a fixture in North Beach, with your Argentine flair, your love of the food at Il Pollaio, your fondness for beer at the now-gone O'Reilly's Pub on Green Street, and your faithful English Springer Spaniel companion, Luigi, who often wandered freely in the Park and on the streets, but who was never long gone from your side. Sometimes we would see you in your old red truck with your ex-wife Deidra, with Luigi sitting contentedly between you.

You have left behind so many friends here. That is a sign of a life well-lived even if it was cut short. You will see Luigi soon on the other side, as you two were always meant to be together.
