Robert John "Bob" Calvert passed away on November 8, 2023.
Bob came to California in 1945 from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to attend Stanford as an undergraduate, and stayed to earn a Stanford Law degree. While there, he fell in love with fellow student Carol Kraemer. Their on-campus wedding ceremony at Stanford Memorial Chapel marked the beginning of a 70-year loving marriage. After passing the bar, Bob served in various State agencies before becoming a judge in California's workers' compensation court system, a position he held for 24 years.
Bob had a dizzying array of interests and talents. Although he was legally blind, and thus unable to drive or to read printed materials easily, he never let that hold him back, living a life of rich and varied experience. He was an expert classical and jazz pianist, a killer chess player, an inventive game designer, and a lover of adventure travel, including a trans-Pacific solo journey by freighter and multiple trips to Russia to study its legal system. He was passionate about literature, frequently leading discussions as a member of the Great Books Council of San Francisco. He also loved language; his quick wit and knack for puns often led to combined groans and smiles.
Bob is survived by his wife Carol, as well as by their loving children Kathy Calvert (and her husband Charlie Smith), Rob Calvert (and his wife Katie), and Sarah Snider (and her husband Kevin). Bob was the proud grandfather of six grandchildren: Kathy's children Laurel and Galen Woerner, Rob's children Matthew and Duncan Calvert, and Sarah's children Andrew and Tyler Snider. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
