Robert Kunst Obituary

Robert Edward Kunst

Bob Kunst, age 98, passed away on November 27, 2020 at home in South San Francisco, California, where he resided for the past 65 years.

Bob was proud to be a native son of San Francisco, where he attend Mission High school. The friends he made there became his friends for life, and were part of his extended family. Bob is survived by his children Michael, Gary, Kathleen, and Caroline and his grandchildren Shannon, Matthew, Kelly, and Jason. Bob joined the Navy in 1942 to serve honorably as a gunner's mate in WWII. He met and married the love of his life, Frances Maves, "Billie" to her friends, in the early 1950's while working at the same record distribution company. Billie passed in 2001.

Bob and Billie were among the first residents to buy in the newly built homes in their South City neighborhood. There they made friends with everyone on their street, and raised their children in the simpler days of block parties and stay-at-home moms. Bob retired from the San Francisco Newspaper Agency in 1984, where he had worked for 33 years, first for the Examiner, and then the Chronicle. Upon his retirement, Bob and Billie were free to travel, and travel they did, sometimes with long-time friends, and sometimes with family … everything from simple camper road trips to fancy intercontinental cruises.

Bob was a devoted Catholic, and a founding member of the Mater Dolorosa Parish. He loved God, his county, and his family. He will be remembered as a kind man with a good sense of humor and a twinkle in his eye.

I have many memories of Bob and the Burlingame Bunch. We had a lot of good times in his home with Billie and him and the group and we also had a lot of good times in our home. He was a kind, gentle man with a good heart and altho I didn't hear or talk with him for a long, long time, I am sorry that he has passed on. May his memory live in all our hearts, and may your many happy memories of him give the family peace, He has met his maker and I'm sure he is making our Lord smile with his good sense of humor. God bless the family.

My father, Donald Stewart was one of the lunch bunch from the paper. After he died, I attended some of these lunches with my mother. I remember Bob and smart and funny, definitely my favorite in the group. Many of the Great Generation have been rewarded with a long life for their support of our democracy. I am so glad that Bob was one of them. May he rest in peace.

Dear Mike, Gary, Kathy, Caroline,

My condolences to you and your family. Your Dad was a great guy as I even remember him driving his News Call Bulletin truck up and down the street to clear the unexpected snow in South City back in 1962.

Your Mom and Dad were always so welcoming to everyone back on Zita Drive which we all have a lifetime of wonderful memories.

God Bless
