Robert died on Tuesday, October 16th, 2018 at the age of 67. He will be remembered by many with a sword in his hand. He was an internationally respected teacher, performing artist, and fight choreographer known for his encyclopedic knowledge of the martial arts in practice and in history. He held black belts in two martial arts and was a senior instructor in three others. He was a master. He was a tireless student of his craft. As a senior teaching member of the Society of Fight Directors Bob travelled the world and became a specialist in asian weapons. He often spoke of retiring to a village in Thailand. To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.

Bob was a fantastic teacher. Whenever any new student was brave enough to ask how he lost his fingers, he came up with a different story each time. When I was at Cornish, I invited every teacher in my department to come see me in my first professional show in West Seattle... Bob was the only teacher who showed. Meant to the world to me and my family and its a photo that I will always cherish. My boyfriend (who I'm still with!) got excused from the program at Cornish, and Bob fought for him. They would talk for hours about Asian films and Asian history / war. Bob passed on my boyfriend's birthday and we mention him every year. He had so much left to do for the world, it's a tragedy. My mother passed away not long after Bob from cancer as well and I know they're spirits somewhere in Thailand just laughing it up.

I find myself thinking about Bob a lot these days during the pandemic.
I miss him.
He was a master teacher for four years at our overnight Camp Demigod to children, ages 8-22. This is one of many photos from his time with us with his teaching partner Morgan Grody.
We can never replace him and I am grateful that he shared his knowledge and wisdom with us.

We worked on many projects together both in theater and film for over 30 years. I coordinated Bob on several projects. He never let me down and his work was always first class. Whenever I needed a "tough guy" Bob was always there to fill the shoes. Rest in peace old friend.

Bob,
I will never forget the training we did together at Cornish. You were tireless and tremendously supportive with our preparation for our Recommendation fight. Even though it has been a great while since I've seen you, your expertise, encouragement and joy you brought to the work will never be forgotten.
Rest in peace my friend.
