Robert Pence Obituary

Robert Blair Pence Was born in Pence, Indiana on March 16, 1918. He passed away at home on his beloved Mt Tam, September 19, 2011. Bob lived a life that touched untold numbers of friends, relatives, students, acquaintances and others he never met, through his unwavering support and commitment to "doing the honorable and human, 'right' thing". His life was rich in experiences, he served in the US Navy, traveled the world, taught in the San Francisco public school system, Napa Community College and lastly at Contra Costa Community College where he was instrumental in creating a liberal arts curriculum, supporting his belief that working people and veterans returning from the war deserved significantly more educational opportunities than an institution limited to a vocational focus would provide. As Bob passed throughout this world, he enriched the lives of all who were fortunate enough to have met him. With Bob, there was no such thing as a "meaningless conversation" and these weren't just words, Bob lived his convictions daily. Bob was preceded in death by his lovely wife Janet, sorely missed these last nine years, but she was with him every hour of every day in spirit. He is survived by his sister, Patricia Armstrong, Chico, California and nieces and nephews in California, Indiana, Ohio, and British Columbia. There will be a small remembrance gathering at his home on Sunday, October 2nd at 4:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Marin, Hospice by the Bay or the ACLU.

I spent some wonderful times visiting Bob and Janice in their beautiful home. Both were so generous with their time and energy and were remarkable people. I am so fortunate to have known them. I will miss Bob who always had sparkling conversation and wine!
