Robert Sass
05/29/1933 - 09/10/2024
In Loving Memory of Robert William Sass
May 29, 1933 – September 10, 2024
Sausalito, California
Bob Sass, a beloved husband, advocate, and adventurer, passed away peacefully at his home in Sausalito, California, on September 10, 2024. His life exemplified love, service, and the pursuit of purpose.
Born on May 29, 1933, in Davenport, Iowa, Bob graduated from DePauw University in 1955, excelling as editor of The DePauw newspaper and earning the prestigious Pulliam Scholarship for journalism. Following college, he served as a First Lieutenant and jet pilot in the U.S. Air Force, stationed in Japan.
In 1958, Bob began a distinguished 34-year career at Wadsworth Publishing Company in San Francisco, rising to vice president and board member. His leadership left an indelible mark on the company and his colleagues.
Bob shared a joyous life with his husband, Larry Dark, whom he met in Key West in 1991. Together, they embraced a life of shared passions-sailing, music, theater, and travel-building a home filled with love and laughter.
An ardent advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and social justice, Bob led transformative initiatives, including serving as president of the Human Rights Foundation, co-chairing the Pride Foundation's Individual Gifts Campaign, and organizing the Bay Area's first Human Rights Campaign fundraiser. He was a founding committee member of San Francisco's Gay and Lesbian Center and chaired the KAIROS Board, supporting caregivers.
Bob is survived by his husband, Larry, and cousin, Steve Sass of Bettendorf, Iowa. His kindness, humor, and dedication to justice inspired countless lives. Bob's legacy will continue to shine as a beacon of love, compassion, and authenticity for all who knew him.
