Sally Reed Obituary

Sally Reed

April 5, 1937 - April 17, 2015

Sally Ann Reed, formerly Sally Douglas, passed away peacefully at home soon after her 78th birthday. Sally was born and raised in Chicago. She reared her family in Chicago, Denver and on the San Francisco Peninsula. She often reminisced about her long journey from St. Malachy's Catholic Parish of Chicago to the Unitarian Universalist Church of San Mateo both in distance and philosophy.
Sally was one of the kindest, most loving, and giving persons on this earth. She loved her family deeply and fiercely. She was an incredible, supporting soundboard for her children, their friends, and her community. Sally had three sons, and later in life a daughter, and two grandchildren, Jarrett and Aidan. She taught her children that if they saw two people loving each other then that was far better than seeing people hate one another. She was an ear when you needed to talk; she was a friend when you needed a friend.

Sally wrote that she tried hard to live a good life and she was grateful for the life that was hers. She knew she had the respect of her family and her community. She loved all kinds of music from honkey tonk to classical. She lived to see great changes in society. She read a lot. She obtained a Bachelors degree and a Masters Certificate in Theology. Sally felt she was just another life in this world, but she had a chance to vote in this democracy and did, and she tried to help other women whenever she could. Her life was filled with church activities, Homework Central, the Homeless Kitchen, the Sunday Sisters, the Walkie Talkies, the Crones, the Aging & Sage-ing Group, visits with family and friends, learning computer skills, and an occasional gambling trip. Sally saw a great deal of this world; she saw many sunrises and sunsets. As a retired Reservationist for United Airlines, she travelled the world with Pat, her husband of 60 years, and others who had the good fortune of tagging along.
Sally is survived by an immense and appreciative family and extended family whose names are too many to mention. Her kindness had a ripple effect that touched us all and we will miss her dearly. In the Book of Life, Sally's life will be written as a Blessing.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11am on Saturday, May 16, 2015 at The Unitarian Universalist Church of San Mateo, 300 E. Santa Inez Ave, San Mateo, CA 94401. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Unitarian Church of San Mateo.
