Sally Jo Dwilla Young, 88, of San Francisco, California passed away on April 8, 2023, after a two-week illness. Sally was a devoted wife of 62 years to Richard Young, mother to Paul and mother-in-law to Michelle. Born in San Francisco on May 18, 1934, to loving parents Sally and Joseph Dwilla, she attended George Washington High School and Lone Mountain College. Sally worked for the San Francisco Convention and Visitors Bureau, sharing with others the city she treasured.
A devoted member of St. Francis' Episcopal Church, Sally was lovingly considered a matriarch of the parish. She served several terms on the Vestry including leadership service as Senior Warden, and worked closely with clergy and staff as longtime Directress of the St. Francis' Altar Guild. She was a delegate to the Diocesan Convention for several elected terms, helped organize the annual retreat to Bishop's Ranch, and was actively involved in many women's guilds.
Sally worked many years as Secretary of Episcopal Province VIII. Her service at the Diocesan level included many years as Chair of the annual United Thank Offering fundraising program, and she was an active and vital member of the Diocesan Altar Guild and churchwide Altar Guild. Sally later served as Parish Administrator for St. Aidan's Episcopal Church, San Francisco for many years, with her husband Richard often working side by side with her.
As one of the many organizations she supported, Sally was an active member of P.E.O. for 49 years. Sally was a lifetime Girl Scout, enjoyed supporting the young troops at St Francis', and was the featured speaker on Girl Scout Sunday at the Presidio Interfaith Chapel.
Please join the St. Francis' Parish and family in celebrating the life of our long-time cherished member, Sally Jo Dwilla Young. A memorial service and reception will be held at St. Francis' Episcopal Church, 399 San Fernando Way @ Ocean Avenue on Saturday, May 20, 2023, at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Sally's name be made to St. Francis' Episcopal Church, (399 San Fernando Way, San Francisco, CA 94127).
