Sheldon Wolfe Obituary

Sheldon H. Wolfe
June 25, 1933 - September 2, 2022
Sheldon Harvey Wolfe was born to Dorothy and Robert Wolfe on June 25, 1933. He grew up in San Francisco where he graduated from Lowell High School. Later he attended UC Berkeley and rooted on those Bears for the rest of his life, attending countless Big Games, which became a family tradition. He served in the U.S. Navy for three years. On a fortuitous night off, he met the love of his life, Rhoda Levit and they married in 1958. After the Navy, he went to Boalt School of Law in Berkeley, where he distinguished himself as an outstanding student whose mind was as deep as he was tall. After receiving his law degree, he and Rhoda moved to San Francisco, where Sheldon began his career as an attorney with Pettit and Martin until their closure. Later he joined the law firm of Steefel, Levitt and Weiss, which was absorbed by Manatt, Phelps and Phillips, from which he retired at age 84. Sheldon loved his work and was also passionate about travel and learning and sports, and he devoted himself to giving back to his beloved community. Sheldon was deeply committed to strengthening the Jewish community and bonds with the State of Israel, which he visited countless times. Sheldon was very generous with his time and resources. He offered his leadership as a volunteer for many organizations, including The Marine Mammal Center, Guide Dogs for the Blind, The SF Jewish Community Center, Jewish National Fund, and UC Hastings College of Law. He was Board president of the Bay Area Council of Soviet Jewry, President of Congregation Sherith Israel, President of the board of URJ Camp Swig, and campaign chair of Jewish Federation. But nothing mattered more to Sheldon than his family. He was a loving husband of 64 years to Rhoda Levit Wolfe, beloved father to Rabbi Greg Wolfe (Julie Hochman) and Amy Wolfe. Wonderful grandfather to Ariella Wolfe Maurer (Nick Maurer), Noah Wolfe, Maya Wolfe & Jasper Wolfe. He was deeply loved by his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Sally and Dr. Gil Gradinger, nieces and nephews and extended family and many, many friends. Shel passed away peacefully on September 2, 2022, surrounded by his loved ones. He will be greatly missed and leaves an inspiring legacy, having touched innumerable lives with his humor, wisdom, work ethic, and passion for his SF sports teams. Shel will be remembered for deeply caring for his friends and family and for making the world a better place. Contributions in Sheldon's memory can be made to a memorial fund at Congregation Sherith Israel dedicated to sponsoring lectures fostering a love and appreciation for Israel, which was so dear to Sheldon. Please be sure to note that your donation is in Sheldon's memory. https://www.sherithisrael.org/form/general-fund.html

Periodically "check-up" on the wonderful attorneys I worked with at Pettit & Martin. Saddened to learn of Sheldon's passing. Happy to hear he had such a long, productive career & life. I adored working at P&M (in accounting) and the guidance & support from Sheldon was pivotal in the smart professional choices I made after leaving P&M.

I was Sheldon´s Secretary at Steefel, Levit & Weiss. As time passed he gave me more & leeway creating documents and editing his letters. He helped me grow tremendously in my skills.

Sheldon was my boss for several years and he took a special interest in honing my skills and my growth in the field of Estate Planning was tremendous under his leadership. I am sorry for the loss to the entire family.

Dear Rhoda,
As Leah who "broke the glass ceiling" in the Hebrew conversation group, I was privileged to study with, learn from, and greatly enjoy the intellect, humor, and general menschiness of Shmuel/Sheldon. In person at his office or in your home or on Skype, those Friday, and later Wednesday, mornings became a special time during which we laughed a lot and covered many topics, whether or not our "uneven" Hebrew vocabulary could properly address them. Eli and I have been further honored by our friendship with both of you. We know your loss is profound, but Sheldon's memory will surely be the blessing his life was to you and your family and to all who knew him. We send our condolences and love.

I was greatly saddened to learn that Sheldon had passed away. We worked together for 17+ years at Pettit & Martin, where, of course, he made sure I was aware of the Jewish Community Federation, and I have wonderful memories of him. After I left the firm, I would run into him from time to time and was always glad to see him. The last time I saw him, he was trying out opera at a Saturday morning Met HD-cast --- evidence that he continued to try new things in his later years. My deepest condolences to Rhoda and their children. Sheldon was truly a mensch who made a difference in the world; may his memory be a blessing.

Dear Mrs. Wolfe and family,

I am saddened to learn of Sheldon's passing and am so sorry for your loss.

Sheldon was a true gem and a delight to partner with as a trusted estate planning attorney during my tenure working with several charitable organizations in San Francisco. His skilled expertise coupled with genuine light, care for people and generous spirit will be missed.

May you find comfort in all Sheldon's life represented and achieved and may his memory be a blessing to each of you. I am grateful to have known Sheldon and his friendship on behalf of his clients and the San Francisco community at large.

With sincere condolences,

Sindy L. Craig
