Shirley Andrews Obituary

Shirley Andrews
05/04/1930 - 07/09/2024
Shirley Lola Andrews died peacefully July 9th in her home in Claremont, California surrounded by her children. She was 94.
Shirley was the only daughter of Joseph Gordon Saunders and Lola Collette Saunders of Taber, Alberta. She was predeceased by her older brother Gordon and younger brother Reg.
Shirley married Edgar Herbert Andrews in 1959 and they raised three children – David Morgan, Katherine Jo (Kate), Joseph Ritchie – in San Mateo, California. Edgar passed in 2007.
Born on May 4, 1930, at the beginning of the Great Depression, Shirley was the first member of her family to attend college, earning a degree in English from Utah State University in 1951. She was an athlete in high school, an actress in college, and worked for the Girl Scouts of America for several years upon graduation. She became a public servant, an educator, an avid SF Giants and 49ers fan, a dedicated church volunteer, and a joyful gardener.
In the 1970s Shirley returned to school to earn an MA in Psychology from CSU Hayward. She then became the Director of Personnel for the City of San Mateo while also teaching evening courses on women's re-entry to the workforce at the College of San Mateo – all while remaining a deeply involved, attentive, and loving parent.
Everywhere Shirley went, she touched people's lives for good. She was a woman of principle in all phases of her life, standing up for the right and refusing to countenance injustice.
Shirley is survived by her three children, eight grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held in the Claremont building of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Saturday, July 27 at 4pm.

In the early eighties (1982?), I moved to San Mateo from Seattle. I chose San Mateo because it was halfway between two colleges I hoped to attend, UC Berkeley and Stanford. In my early twenties, with no job skills or a college education, I stayed at a youth shelter as often as they allowed it. I applied for jobs I found in the newspaper want ads. One day, I found myself sitting across the desk from Shirley Andrews, explaining my immediate need for work. I had applied for a job with the City of San Mateo. Even though I wasn´t qualified for the position, she met with me anyway. By the end of that interview, she offered me a place to stay in her home, for as long as it took for me to find a job. I´ll never forget her kindness.

I´m sorry to hear of Shirley´s passing. She was my first and best friend when I first came to Taber for school. She convinced me to come with her to try out for basketball. I have good memories of Shirley and her family.
