Stephen Berg Obituary

Stephen Allen Berg A man known for his generosity, business savvy, sense of humor and devotion to his family, Stephen Allen Berg passed away on April 16. He was 63. Stephen was a fifth generation, pre-gold rush, San Franciscan. He was born at San Francisco Children's Hospital and lived in the city until moving to Atherton as a young child. He graduated from Menlo-Atherton High School in 1963. Stephen was the ultimate entrepreneur, always looking for opportunities in unexpected places. Aside from a six-month stint working for a bank in Amsterdam after his college graduation from San Jose State, he always had his own businesses, from a foray into the courier business in his mid-20s to publishing, telecommunications and promoting Snoopy products in South Korea. For the past 15 years, he worked on building his group of businesses: H3R Clean Agent Specialists, H3R Aviation and H3R Performance. "Stephen had the heart, soul and mind of an entrepreneur. No one could spot an opportunity like Stephen," said his wife Robin who was Stephen's soul mate for 17 years. "He was so admired by his employees, business associates and customers as the guy whom you could depend on to deliver as promised. He had high ethical standards and always found creative ways to take care of his customers' needs." Together, the couple started Gallery Bergelli in downtown Larkspur in 2000, based on their mutual love of art. Stephen loved San Francisco-the restaurants, the walks, the symphony, the art. As a member of the Ross Valley Tennis Club, Stephen was an avid tennis player. He was known for his brightly colored clothes, reflecting his love of the sun, and for planning special, spontaneous trips for his family, who will miss him dearly. Stephen is survived by his mother, Noyon E. Berg; wife, Robin Critelli; daughter, Lily; son, Chen; brother, Jonathon; sister-in-law, Susan; nephew, Jackson; and other loved aunts and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Daniel E. Berg. A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, April 24, at noon at the Marin Arts and Garden Center, 30 Sir Francis Drake Blvd, Ross, CA 94957. The family would like to express their deep appreciation for the support and care of Dr. David Ogden throughout Stephen's illness. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Heartsent Adoptions International, 140 Brookwood Rd, #100, Orinda, CA 94563. Funds will be earmarked for the Heartsent Learning Solutions Program.

I remember all of us in the back of the van, speeding along on the ridiculously bumpy road in the countryside of China. Everyone was about to see their daughter for the first time- soon to be their daughter for the rest of their life! You can imagine the excitement, nervousness and thrill- unbelievable. As the paved highway gave into potholes and gravel, it seemed that our speed did not change. It became impossible to talk. Stephen was with Robin in the last seat of the van- so much bouncing, jouncing and bumps into the air. I looked at Stephen and all we could do was laugh, that giddy laugh you have when there was nothing else to do because the situation was so ridiculous and meaningful at the same time. I will remember his laugh. And Robin holding Lily for the first time with such tenderness.Stephen and I looking at the one star hotel in southernmost China until we found a room on the top floor that did not come with "pets". We laughed so much! Such was my real introduction to this beautiful family. Now the world is less one kooky character. I'm so glad I got to know Stephen- he was a a bigger than life person, with an amazing heart.

Dear Robin, Noyon, and family,
My husband Don and I met Stephen in the mid 1970's. Reading the thoughts shared here make it clear that Stephen remained true to the man he was. Our pathes had not crossed recently, but we are saddened at his passing at such a young age. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this difficult time.
Respectfully, Judy and Don Thompson,

Dear Robin, I just heard the news from Margaret. Though I hadn't seen much of you two lately, I was aware of what you were going through. You both were such a great couple and tribute to "love at first sight". I will always remember Stephen's vitality and generous spirit, but mostly I will remember the special love you shared with each other. My thoughts go out to you, Lily and Chen.
Much love, Keatin Holly

I am an old, and long lost friend of Steve's. When my 2 girls were little, Steve would have us over often and we shared so much fun. You may not know this, but Steve was the inventer of the world famous, "Foogiemanoolie" (a goofy Steve name for a hair rubber band!) How he could make my girls laugh! We have special memories of Steve and will remember him often.

Robin,Lily and Chen:

While I am not a current friend of the family, I have a very special place in my heart for Stephen. He and I spent many adventures together and long period on tennis courts. I miss him in my life previous to his passing and certainly have a loving memory of him today.

When Frank introduced me to Stephen, he said "He's the brother I never had." If half the stories Frank has told me about their exploits together are true, then brothers they were indeed. What a guy.
