Stephen Chapman Obituary

Stephen Alan Chapman

July 10, 1947 - May 9, 2016

Stephen 'Steve' Chapman peacefully passed away on May 9, 2016 at the age of 68 in San Mateo, California following a courageous 12-year battle with cancer.

Steve is survived by his beloved wife Peggy and his loving children: son Mike Chapman of Hillsborough; son Jim Chapman, his wife Feliz and grandchildren Siena and Dashiel of Burlingame; daughter Lela Ward and granddaughter Norah of Redwood City; and son Mathew Ward, his wife Lindsay and grandsons Jackson and Jameson of Seattle, Washington. His brother Bruce Chapman of Folsom also survives him.

Steve was born in San Francisco and graduated from Aragon High School in San Mateo. He graduated with a BA in Liberal Arts from the University of Pacific and then earned his MS in Engineering at UCLA in 1970. Steve spent most of his professional career at Gap. At Gap and in his subsequent career as a management consultant, Steve was known as a gifted collaborator and great communicator, able to master complex projects spanning IT, Finance, Operations and Human Resources.

Steve loved spending time outdoors and was an avid tennis player, camper, cycling enthusiast and kayaker. Steve and Peggy spent many happy years at their summer home in Sunriver, Oregon hosting annual visits by family and friends from the Bay Area and Pacific Northwest. Steve was known lovingly to his friends as 'MacGyver' for his ability to find solutions to complex problems using ordinary objects…he could fix, rig, or solve just about anything.

Steve was a loving father, grandpa, husband and devoted friend and his loss is deeply felt.

A private memorial service is planned. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to UCSF Oncology Department, Second Harvest Food Bank, or Monterey Bay Aquarium.
