Stephen Holl Obituary

Stephen A. Holl June 3, 1949 - January 13, 2012 Steve passed away peacefully in the arms of his loving wife Mary Munhall Holl after a courageous 21/2 year battle with brain cancer. A fifth generation Californian and fourth generation, native-born San Franciscan, Steve was a resident of Folsom, which he often referred to as "God's Country," for the past 24 years. Steve was the first of seven sons born to Arthur (deceased) and Claire Holl. He attended St. Gabriel Grammar School, Riordan High School ('67), UC Davis ('73), and California State University Fresno (MS Biology '76). His career included work as a wildlife biologist for the federal government, as a consulting biologist for Jones & Stokes Associates and, for the past ten years, his own wildlife and environmental consulting practice in Folsom. A recognized expert in bighorn sheep, Steve led efforts to expand their population and range in the San Gabriel Mountains. He also conducted numerous forest fire management and environmental studies throughout the Tahoe basin and the Sierras. Steve's public service included tenure as Chairman of the Parks and Recreation Commission of Folsom from 1990-1996, where he was instrumental in setting aside land for local parks. Steve's spirit lives on through Mary, his best friend and devoted wife of 37 years, twin daughters Amy and Eryn; sons-in-law Tom Davenport and Ryan King, and grandchildren, Gene, Stella, Neil and Audrey; by his mother Claire Holl and six brothers, Dennis, Brian, Jeffrey, Kevin, Tim and Greg; by sisters-in-law Linda, Tina, Kathleen, Laura and Suzy; and by 11 nephews and nieces. The family is extremely grateful for the care Steve received at UCSF in a clinical trial involving a vaccine treatment for malignant brain tumors. The treatment provided him the gift of time, allowing him to walk his daughter Eryn down the wedding aisle, and to witness the birth of two of Amy's children. The family gratefully acknowledges their Valley Pines neighbors, Folsom friends, high school and college friends, professional colleagues, doctors, Mercy Hospice and Steve's long term caregiver, who all provided support and loving care. A funeral mass will be held at 10 o'clock, on Thursday, January 26, at St. Joseph Marello Catholic Church, 7200 Auburn-Folsom Road, Granite Bay, CA 95746. A reception will immediately follow at the Folsom Community Center, 50 Natoma Street, Folsom, CA 95630. The family asks that gifts in memory of Steve Holl be made to any of the following: The Society for the Conservation of Bighorn Sheep, P.O. Box 94182, Pasadena, CA 91109; The Parsa Vaccine Fund or the Neuro-Oncology Fund in the brain tumor program at UCSF. Checks may be made out to the UCSF Foundation (with fund specified) and sent in c/o Eileen Murphy, 220 Montgomery Street, 5th Floor, San Francisco, CA 94104.

This is a sad day to hear of a man that tried a new treatment to help all stage 4 cancer patients. My brother was diagnosed in 2010 and he is almost at his end. This is a horrible thing to see our loved ones go through and my prays are for him and his family. I am sure that god has placed in some sort of test and Mr. Holl is at peace right now. God bless the family and Mr. Holl for his courage to go through this.

Dear Ms. Holl,

I recently heard of your loss and was very saddened. I am truly sorry for your husband's passing, and I wish you the best. I still say that you were the best teacher I've ever had and I would not be where I am today had I not been in your fourth grade class. My thoughts and love are with you in these hard times, and I hope to get back in touch soon.

All my love,
Andy

Mrs. Holl, your 4th grade class at Folsom Hills Elementary still means much to me, eleven years later. Know that you are in the hearts of so many students. You are a light in young lives, but now a brighter light shines down upon you always.

I spent eight years of grammar school in the same class with Steve at St. Gabriel's in San Francisco, and I have fond memories of Steve and his whole family. His Mom an Dad were two of the nicest people I ever met. It is no wonder Steve and all his siblings turned out so good. He will be missed and our condolences and prayers go out to Steve and his family and the entire Holl family.

Mary... Teresa and I send our condolences and you, Amy, and Eryn are in our prayers. Steve was all anyone could ask for in a friend or colleague, and we knew and appreciated him as both. He will be missed, but the truly important thing is that he will also be remembered. When he was diagnosed, we recall him saying that his dream was to be able to dance with Eryn at her wedding, and he did. Steve... "Dance, dance, wherever you may be..."

With much love,

Steve, you were born into two families --McGlennon and Murphy-Holl--as the first grandchild of both doting pairs...and you handled it very well.
You were able to tell your mom when #2 Dennis needed a change and taught all your brothers to do the same. You were a darling little boy who I felt honored to babysit...a chatty, alert and very bright handfull.
You grew into an articulate visionary who made this world a better place! I know I will meet you again in Paradise. Cousin Carol Murphy

I mistakenly took Steve's leather jacket home after a party thinking it was my husband's! When Mary & Steve were ready to leave the party, they couldn't find it. That night, the host emailed everyone about the missing jacket. A couple of days went by, and I noticed that my husband had not been wearing his favorite leather jacket hanging on the coat rack. When I inquired, Murray said that it wasn't his and that he had been wondering why it was there. I then realized that I was the guilty party who had taken Steve's jacket!! You see, my husband had to leave the party abruptly. So, in my mind, since he had to leave so quickly, I thought Murray had forgotten his jacket on the sofa....same color and size. Needless to say, we all had a great laugh! - thinking of you Mary, and your beautiful family during this difficult time. Monique, Murray, Stefanie & Phillip Krehbiel
