Stephen McFeely Obituary

Stephen Allen McFeely
1947-2022
Stephen Allen McFeely died on January 25, 2022 at his home in Santa Fe, New Mexico. A prominent Bay Area and Los Angeles trial lawyer, he specialized in complex, multiparty civil litigation, often involving sensitive issues.
Steve practiced law at Oakland's largest law firm, Crosby Heafey Roach & May from 1972 until 2002. The Crosby firm had a proud tradition of trial work, under the aegis of Edwin Heafey, Jr. Over the course of his career, Steve tried cases on behalf of numerous clients, including the Oakland Unified School District, the Bishop of Oakland, Chrysler Corporation and Farmers Insurance Exchange, ultimately trying over fifty civil cases to verdict or judgment. Steve also served as firmwide managing partner at the Crosby firm.
In 2002, Steve became a partner in the Los Angeles office of Foley & Lardner. His work at Foley, representing the Bishop of Oakland and the Salesian Brothers, was the capstone of his career. Steve was a trusted advisor, friend and mentor to younger lawyers and even to his peers.
Steve retired to Santa Fe, New Mexico with his beloved wife, Jacqueline Jauregui McFeely. He deeply enjoyed the beauty of the high desert and relished having the leisure to travel the world.
Steve was the fifth of six children born to James and Leona McFeely. He spent his childhood in the East Bay. At the urging of his much loved Aunt Frances, he attended high school at Bellarmine Preparatory in San Jose, where he was a proud member of a storied Bellarmine football team, the 1964 Bells. The Bells outscored their opponents 271-26 on the way to a 9-0 record.
In 1969, Steve graduated from St. Mary's College in Moraga, where, as a senior, he edited the school paper, the Collegian. He attended Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco, where he served as a Note and Comment editor on the Hastings Law Journal. More importantly, while Steve was in law school, he and his first wife, Madeline, became parents twice over, with the births of Stephen Albert and Jennifer Leona.
Steve and his young family settled in the East Bay, where evenings were spent dancing to golden oldies, weekends were spent coaching basketball and summers were spent taking vacations both relentlessly educational and occasionally relaxing.
Steve cherished his son and daughter, and was deeply proud of their character and accomplishments, and of the fact both became such good parents. Steve is survived by his wife, Jackie, his son Stephen (Jennifer Cotteleer) daughter Jenna (Jayson Wall) stepson Timothy Griffin, stepdaughter Julia Griffin (Ted O'Toole) grandson John, granddaughters Mary, Georgia and Ryan Jacqueline, two sisters, Ann Soares and Patricia Belding, two brothers, James and Michael McFeely, and his former wife, Madeline McFeely.
Good night, sweet prince. Let angels sing thee to thy rest.

Dear McFeely Family,
The last five years or so I have been meaning to call Steve.
I went to grammar school with him. We were close and loyal friends. Spent many hoppy afternoons at his Mom and Dad's house. I was the fat little kid who wanted to be a priest. I was married for twenty-four years. Then my wife died. In a few years I attended St. Patrick's Seminary. Ordained in 2000. Steve and his parents had me for sleepovers. I knew he was going to be a lawyer. We share the Three Stooges. Also we kidded around with archaic phoney legal jargon: Steve would say, "a what, tuit, prithee." The only term sometimes used in court was prithee, and that only in the UK. Steve was a really smart and kind friend. I will truly miss him. Be assured of my continued prayers.
Rev.

I met Steve and Brian O'Connor, classmates of my husband during his days at Bellarmine. Jim is gone now but he would want to pay his respects to Steve's family and remember many good times that included the Kelly's, the McFeely's and the O'Connors as we started our lives and families.

I was a classmate of Steve´s at Saint Mary´s and Hastings and we worked on The Collegian newspaper together-and I followed his outstanding law career from a distance. Saddened to hear of his death-he was a solid guy respected by his peers. Condolences to Jackie and Family.
