Sue Merriman Obituary

Sue Anne Merriman
June 20, 1933 - February 6, 2021
Sue Anne Merriman was born Sue Anne Jones in Centralia, Illinois, on June 20, 1933. Sue moved to Burlingame, California, with her parents Raymond Fonz Jones and Gladys Lund Jones, during her high school years. Attending Burlingame High School, Sue, or as friends fondly called her "Susie," was active in her high school sorority, student council, and many other school activities. Sue went on to earn a bachelor's degree in Economics from Stanford University. After college during the 1950's advertising "Mad Men" era, Sue began a career at BBDO in San Francisco.
While living upstairs in a two-level apartment flat on Octavia St., Sue met her future husband and UC Berkeley graduate, Dwight Livingston Merriman Jr., who lived on the bottom floor. From their first date at Ondine's Restaurant in Sausalito, Sue and Dwight had met their match. They built a life together full of love, fun, "Big Games," friends, humor, and mutual respect. Married in 1959, Dwight and Sue settled in Marin County and had three children: Dwight Livingston Merriman III (1961), Gregory Raymond Merriman (1963), and Cynthia Anne Merriman (1968). Sue devoted her life to her family as a wife, mother, and grandmother through her tireless efforts to create a beautiful home, host holidays, and be there for everyone. Sue also volunteered many years to Sunny Hills Orphanage in San Anselmo and was a member of the Junior League of San Francisco. In 1982 Sue began managing her dear friend Betty Crittenden's gift shop, The Dovecote in Belvedere, and enjoyed working there as manager and buyer for many years. Sue was extremely talented in the lost art of sewing. From sewing her own clothes, curtains, slipcovers, and all of her children and grandchildren's costumes, she had a visual eye for style and design. Sue was an avid reader, an incredible cook, loved dancing, and her loyal dog, Daisy.
Sue Anne Merriman passed away Saturday, February 6, 2021, surrounded by her three children and devoted caretakers and friends in her beloved home at 87 years old. Sue will be missed by everyone who knew her. Sue is now in heaven with her parents, Raymond and Gladys. She is reunited with her husband of 53 years, Dwight Jr., who passed away in 2013, her brother-in-law Philip Merriman, and niece Margaret Merriman. She is survived by her three children: Dwight, Greg, and Cynthia. Sue will be remembered with pride and admiration by her five Merriman grandchildren: Grace, Whitney, Olivia, Phoebe, and Griffin. Sue was a dear friend to daughters-in-law's Angella Merriman and Kristin Merriman. Her sister, Sally Rae Bishop, nephew, Mike Raymond Bishop, nieces, Kate and Porter Merriman, grand-niece, Elsa Merriman and sister-in-law, Elizabeth Burke Merriman will also miss her dearly.
Sue led a full and purposeful life filled with many friends and a family who loved her and her strength, kindness, fair treatment, and selfless and genuine interest in others. Her memory will live on in all of our hearts and spirits. Please send donations to Sunny Hills Orphanage of San Anselmo or the Marin Humane Society in Novato in lieu of flowers.
