Susan Carrington Greenly

July 7, 1939 - June 25, 2014

Gone too soon and deeply treasured, our Susan departed this life on June 25, 2014, following a lengthy illness. Susan was surrounded by her immediate family, and close friends, at the time of her passing. A recent resident of Nicasio, California, Susan lived a life full of travel and her loss will be felt by her many friends around the globe. Born Mary Susan Gilhooley on July 7, 1939 to Thomas Edward and Mildred Strong Gilhooley of Christiansburg, Virginia. Susan was the eldest of four sisters. She is survived by her loving husband Dr. David I. Greenly, her two cherished daughters, Christine Carrington-Winters, 53 and Claire Carrington McDowell, 52 and her beloved son Michael David Greenly, 34. Susan ("Nana") is lovingly remembered by her grandchildren: Gabrielle Carrington Winters, 28, Mason Carrington McDowell, 21, Avery Dee McDowell, 18 and Rilke Evangalista Greenly, 13. Susan is also survived by her three sisters, Martha Moore Clarke of Virginia, Annie Thiele Ramsey of Ohio and Marie Gilhooley Eisele of New Jersey.
Susan graduated from McClenaghan High School of Florence, South Carolina in 1957 and was described by her friends as, "poised, a maiden with beauty blessed". She went on to study at College of Notre Dame of Maryland, University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and University of Cincinnati where she earned her Bachelors Degree in Psychology. Susan did graduate work at San Francisco State University where she received a Masters Degree in counseling. She was the Director of the Information and Referral Service at United Way in San Francisco, CA. Susan was a talented and classically trained pianist who began playing at age 3, and worked at times as a professional accompanist. She was a gifted Soprano and sang with the Cincinnati Opera in the 1960's. Susan and her family have lived in Italy, Turkey, California, Virginia, South Carolina, and Ohio. She traveled extensively in South East Asia, India, Nepal, Tibet, Africa, China, Japan and Europe with many return trips to visit with friends made around the world. Susan considered home base to be the Bay Area and raised her family in Berkeley and Marin County, CA. Susan was a gracious hostess, kind friend and generous spirit, radiant with beauty both physical and spiritual. She was the beloved center of our family and is now, and will always be, forever and profoundly missed.
