Sylvia Blumenfeld

Sylvia Blumenfeld, the first child of Bertha (nee Felker) Schneider and David Schneider, died peacefully on October 2018. Born in 1921 she graduated from Hunter College in February 1942 with a degree in BioChemistry and quickly volunteered for work at a laboratory in Ft. Monmouth, New Jersey to help in the war effort. During that time, she met Lt. David Fain and they married in 1943. After the war, they moved to Chicago and then to Portland, Oregon.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Lillian Rosenthal, both of her husbands, step-son Alan and step-daughter Joan. She is survived by daughters, Andrea Fain Selig (and partner Joel Erlitz) and Judith Fain (and partner Kay Kuczynski), her beloved grandchildren David, Lauren and Jordan (and spouse Johan Strand), her extra-special greatgrandchildren (her GGs) Avery, Pasha and Noah as well as step-daughter Carol (and spouse Sasha), step-son Bob and all of Joe Blumenfeld's grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Irwin, sister-in-law Harriet Schneider as well as a niece and nephews.
After her husband's death in 1956, Sylvia moved to San Francisco to work in a lab at UCSF. In San Francisco she met and then married Joseph Blumenfeld. For their next twenty plus years together, they entertained their many friends, played golf and bridge (one for the body and one for the mind) and traveled extensively all over the world. After her spouse's death she continued to play golf and bridge and continued to explore the world for decades. Additionally but no less importantly, she enjoyed her friends and charitable organizations, unabashedly adored her dogs and was a talented floral arranger who loved being in the presence of beautiful flowers.
She was ever mindful of and often spoke of how incredibly fortunate she had been throughout her life to have enjoyed good health, a loving and beautiful family and been exposed to many different cultures and experiences all over the world. She enjoyed life with an unmatched gusto. After her birth, the mold was broken. She was truly one of a kind.

Dear Andrea and Judy
Please accept my heartfelt condolences. Sylvia was an exceptional women and I felt sad to come across the news of her loss. I have thought of all of you throughout the years and have wonderful memories of our time together when we were young. I hope our paths will connect once again sometime.

My condolences to Judy, Andrea, and the family. I I remember visiting with her at Sara and Yosi's wedding and she complimented me on my outfit. She was very dear, and I most appreciate her offering to help Alisa, my daughter, when Alisa moved to Berkeley.
She was a beautiful person, inside and out! And smart!!!
She left a beautiful legacy, and I'm sure you are very proud of her and will remember her with love, respect, admiration, and gratitude.
