Terryl Levin Obituary

Terryl Albert Levin
August 2, 1952 - August 1, 2022
Terry Levin was born in Stanford Hospital on August 2, 1952 and passed away there on August 1, 2022, on the eve of her 70th birthday. The cause was ovarian cancer, which she battled with singular courage, determination, grace and dignity for nearly three years.
Terry's parents were Martha and Frank Albert. Her father was the legendary Stanford quarterback who later starred for the San Francisco 49ers and eventually became the team's head coach and part owner.
Terry graduated from Stanford in 1974 and was elected Senior Class President. She went on to receive a Master's degree in Public Health from UCLA and a Master's degree in Physical Therapy from Stanford. She practiced orthopedic physical therapy at the Center for Sports Medicine in San Francisco. Her patients ranged from professional athletes to weekend warriors with injuries both major and minor. She was widely admired for the care and compassion with which she treated all her patients, as well as her exceptional professional expertise.
When her twin daughters Alexandra and Caroline were born in 1987, Terry retired from active practice and devoted herself to her family and a wide range of community and civic activities. She was always the room parent, ever present in the school library or art room, the designated driver for all field trips and sporting events. She also served as President of the California Tennis Club, Director of the Bay Area Discovery Museum at its founding, Director of Canine Companions for Independence, Trustee of the Jay and Rose Phillips Family Foundation of California, member of the Stanford Athletic Board, member of the Stanford Bing Overseas Studies Advisory Council, and Chair of five consecutive Stanford class reunions over 25 years. Every activity she undertook, every aspect of her life, reflected her extraordinary energy, positivity and engaging presence.
Terry will be remembered by family and her many friends for her uncommon kindness, generosity of spirit and genuine humility. She leaves behind her husband of 42 years, John Levin, daughters Alexandra Levin and Caroline Levin Hoeveler (Justin), grandchildren Archie and Lydia Hoeveler, sisters Nancy James and Jane Willens, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to express its gratitude for the extraordinary care Terry received at Stanford and in particular to Dr. Jose Maldonado, who was by Terry's side at every step from the day she was diagnosed. The family suggests any donations in Terry's memory be made to the Terry Levin Fund for Excellence in Medical Care at Stanford University, P.O. Box 20466, Stanford, CA 94309-0466. No plans have yet been made for a celebration of Terry's life.

I just read about Terry´s passing
today.
I played tennis with Terry during
several summers at the old Pebble
Beach tennis club. Those days were
great with junior players from the Bay Area, Sacramento like myself,
and of course locals. John Gardiners staff oversaw operations.
Eventually some of us taught tennis under the new pro Don Leary. I believe the last time I saw her was at a Celebrity tournament, I think when we were 16,17 years old. I have to admit that I had a huge crush on Terry as she was a sweet, kind and attractive girl. What I remember most about her( going back to a 16 year memory) were dazzling eyes and beautiful smile .
I am so saddened to read about her death as I was remembering the good old days at Pebble Beach
as my father just passed at 102 two weeks ago . Our family went to
Pebble B for many years
My prayers for her family. She was one of the good ones you remember meeting in life.

I knew Terry as a little girl. I grew up across the street from her in Palo Alto. I still have such fond memories of her. She was a kind, warm, bubbly child who lit up a room. I was going to name one of my children after her but her name was just a bit too close to my other child’s name. I think that tells you the impression she made on me growing up. I looked her family up today because of the Super Bowl and found out about her death. I was just sickened to think of what a loss this is for so many. She was a truly beautiful soul.

I knew Terryl as a child. I grew up across the street from her in Palo Alto. I always loved her. She was warm, kind, bubbly-just lit up a room. I kept in touch with her for awhile after I left the area. I just looked up her father because of the upcoming Super Bowl. I was sickened to hear of Terry´s illness and death. She was such a special woman who will be remembered by many.

I was Terri's TA in chemistry lab at Stanford her freshman year. I tutored her over that year and when she took organic. She was sharp and always friendly. She agreed to hit some tennis with me as payment for tutoring her. Sad to hear of her passing.

Sincere thanks to the Levin family for the beautiful and moving celebration of Terry´s life. For those who knew her in the Class of ´74, Stanford-in-Italy or anything Stanford, she was a big part of some of our happiest times. And like the memories of those times, Terry will always be cherished and never forgotten.

Dear John, Alexandra and Caroline,

Your wife and mother was a remarkable woman. We went to Santa Catalina high school together and here are some of my memories of her. Whenever the teacher handed back our tests reading out loud the
results, without fail Terry would get an A. I was rarely in that rarefied class. Terry was a consummate athlete and leader. After a full day of classes and sports, I would see Terry down by the tennis courts, hitting a tennis ball against the wall. Terry received Gold cords (an achievement in excellence) every time. It would have been shocking if she didn´t. Terry, with her beautiful smile, athletic physique, golden bronzed skin and soothing voice, was the epitome of natural beauty. Terry always was the best she could be. Not many of us can say that. When we saw each other at reunions, she beamed her love for you two girls.
I feel for your loss, that gaping hole, because Terry was full of life, love and accomplishments.

Terry and I shared leadership positions in high school and her gentle, service-style informed my career. She never asked anyone to do something she wouldn't do herself and even in the hothouse environment of high school, I never heard Terry engage in gossip or say a bad word about anyone. I didn't have the talent on the court that she did, but she coached me as if I did, giving me confidence. Terry was fiercely competitive and equally compassionate. A rare blend and a lifelong inspiration.

To meet Terry was to immediately like her, and respect her; we met as co room parents in the girls' Kindergarten class. That early perception never changed but grew over the years. This lovely photo portrays her so well, the sweet gentleness, the twinkle in her eyes, beauty inside and out. Terry grabbed life and her family with much love and gusto, and I can only begin to imagine her loss to you all. There is no doubt she has left her very special imprint on all who knew her, that smile left in our hearts. I am most grateful that we crossed paths so long ago. With sympathy and love, Betsy Cannon

I am extremely saddened to hear of Terry's passing. I played many hours of bridge with Terry over the years and found her perpetually charming, graceful, humorous and kind to her partner and opponents. She threw herself headlong into the game and always had a thirst for improving. I have a feeling she attacked all her other passions (including tennis, other sports, museums, and community service) with equal fervor and commitment. One example of Terry's spirit, fervor and thoughtfulness was when she purchased matching motivational T-shirts for our bridge foursome. She was one-of-a-kind and I will miss her greatly.

I am deeply saddened to hear about Terry's passing. She was a lovely, kind and cheerful woman who was always extremely generous to me with her time and thoughtfulness. When we played bridge together at a friend's house in San Francisco she insisted on driving me all the way back to my home in Berkeley even though I was planning to take BART. I will miss her and her warm heart.

Dear John and family,
I am very thankful for Terry's wonderful and sincere friendship as a '74 classmate at Stanford, and my friendship with you and your family throughout our adult years. Among other things, I will miss saying hello to Terry at half-time of Stanford home football games. Terry has many close friends in the class of '74. We all feel the pain and deep sorrow of losing Terry and we offer our sincere thoughts and prayers for you and your entire family. Sincerely, Randy Poltl

I admired Terry as a Champion of the Great Game of Life. She was an amazing woman who I had the pleasure of meeting while at Stanford. She smiled easily and was always true to herself and others. She was a blessing to ALL who knew her. I am sure the Angels in Heaven will put her to good use.
