Theodore Scourkes Obituary

Theodore Scourkes
September 23, 1925 - July 31, 2023
Dr. Theodore Scourkes passed away on July 31, 2023 at the age of 97.
Ted was born to a Greek immigrant family in Alameda, CA. Soon after, his family moved to San Francisco, where he spent the rest of his life.
He attended Bessie Carmichael Elementary School, Everett Middle School and Mission High School with his twin sister, Mae and his older brother, Gus. During World War II he served as a tank mechanic, after which he worked at General Motors. When he decided to get his college degree, Ted attended San Francisco City College and earned his BA in History at SF State University, along with his teaching credential. He later earned his Master's Degree at SF State and his Doctorate in Education from University of San Francisco.
After driving a school bus and teaching in South Fork, California, where he lived with his first wife, he returned to San Francisco. Ted taught history at various high schools in San Francisco before returning to his Alma Mater, Mission High School, where he became head of the History Department. At Mission, he met and married Inez Kenney, a teacher in his department. Together they raised four daughters, Athena, Tasia, Alexia and Niki.
Ted served as the Principal of Mission High School from 1969-1982, during which he proudly elevated the school with the help of an immensely talented staff and outstanding students. After leaving Mission, he served as Principal at O'Connell High School for several years before becoming Coordinator for Special Education and Summer Schools for the District Office. Ted, Inez and the family spent school breaks at the cabin they built at Lake Tahoe. After they retired, Ted and Inez traveled the world until Inez passed away in 2018.
Ted was renown for his sharp intellect, problem-solving, belief in the potential of every child, sense of humor, fair play and loyalty.
He is survived by his four daughters, five grandchildren, son-in-law, sister-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews. He will be missed dearly by those whose lives he touched. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Dr. Theodore Scourkes can be made to
missionfoundation.org to benefit Mission High School or annunciation.org to benefit the Cathedral of Annunciation.

Please accept my heartfelt condolences to the entire family. Ted was the best Principle I ever had the pleasure of working with at his beloved MHS. Creative and energized with his beautiful smile will be just one of the memories I hope to share with his devoted family.

Ted had a huge impact on not only students but faculty and administrators in the SFUSD. Beyond that he was a stellar father and friend to a wide swath of extended social friends. He and Inez were so much fun to be around. His impact still lives on.

To the family of Mr. Ted Scourkes....I was a student at Mission High and graduated in 1967. I had enormous respect for Mr. S and was encouraged by him at many times of my life. I am grateful to have known him. His direction was so appreciated by many, many Mission High students. His memory lingers, and for all of you most especially. I can only imagine what a great Father he was, and grandfather, uncle, cousin, friend, neighbor, and so on. Heaven is celebrating his arrival, while we mourn his departure. Blessings to all.
