Thomas J. Costello

Thomas J. Costello Beloved brother and uncle, passed away on Jan. 26, 2006 at age 80. Tom was born July 16, 1925 in County Mayo, Ireland and immigrated to the US at age 7. He studied with the Jesuits and served honorably in the US Army. Received a PhD in history from New York's St. John's University, and taught history at several universities. Tom eventually retired from the San Francisco Public Library system. He was an avid reader of history and current and political events; enjoyed swimming, walking, watching sports, and spending time with his nieces and nephews; he supported many charities. Brother of the late John Costello, Julia Coyle, Mary Costello of England, and Delia Durkin and Ellen Roche of San Francisco. Tom is survived by his sister Margaret Barry of Massachusetts, and many nieces and nephews. Friends may visit Thursday (today) after 5pm and are invited to the vigil service at 6pm tonight at the Evergreen Mortuary of McAvoy O'Hara, 4545 Geary Blvd. at Tenth Ave., SF. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 2pm at St. Monica Church, Geary Blvd. & 23rd Ave., SF. Private interment. McAVOY O'HARA CO. 415 668-0077
