Thomas Mannion Obituary

Thomas Peter Mannion At 62 years of age, he left us on October 21, 2007. He was lucky enough to have been born into the widespread Mannion and McDonagh families during the Golden Age of San Francisco. Loving son of Thomas F. and Nora B. Mannion and brother of James Mannion. He attended St. Anne's Grammar School, St. Joseph's College and St. Ignatius High School, thereafter attending the University of San Francisco and Hastings College of Law while working for the United Parcel Service. During his years, he enjoyed many loyal and supportive friendships of numerous San Franciscans throughout the City. Most fortunate of all, was his meeting Jeanne Caserta Mannion, who was everything to him. Jeanne and Tom are blessed with two wonderful children, Christopher and Dana, and further blessed by Christopher's marriage to Victoria Bailey Mannion, along with the gift of two lovely grandchildren Natalie N. Mannion and Thomas M. N. Mannion. Further good luck led to the formation of Spolter, McDonald and Mannion, where three long-time friends engaged in the practice of law for 33 years in San Francisco. During that time, he assisted many interesting and maritime-related clients from the firm's office at Pier 9 on the waterfront. Tom, as the consummate gentlemen-attorney, so well versed in the law that fellow attorneys frequently sought his advice and counsel. His passion for maritime law involved cases ranging from the Summit Venture's knockdown of the Tampa Bay Bridge to the Exxon Valdez in the Alaska oil spill. True to his personal spirit, Tom was generous with his time for good causes, favoring the San Francisco Special Olympics, Catholic Youth Organization (CYO), and Apostleship of the Sea. He also had a special affection for St. Vincent's School for Boys in San Rafael. The family would like to thank California Cancer Care and Hospice by the Bay for all their help and support. Friends are invited to attend the Memorial Mass on Friday, Oct. 26th, 11:00am at St. Vincent's Church, One St. Vincent's Drive, San Rafael. A reception will follow in the courtyard. Private interment at Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Tom asked that if you wish, donations may be made to St. Vincent's School for Boys, Marin Catholic High School, Hospice by the Bay, or your favorite charity.

To Jeanne and family,

I am deeply saddened by the news of Tom's passing. I had the pleasure of working under Tom's 'grace under pressure' tutelage. I worked with Tom at Spolter, McDonald and Mannion and he was our great gentle giant and thoroughly enjoyed his wisdom and experience. My deeepest sympathy

It is with great sadness that my wife Judie and I learned of Tom's passing. I met Tom in 1972 when individuals like C.R. "Babe" Zanca and myself were starting up the San Francisco Special Olympics, and found him to be a very "special person," who in my opinion felt that it was more important to "give/contribute" his time than to seek personal gain. The world will be a lesser place with his absence. Our sincere condolences to his family. We will have a Mass said for the repose of his soul, which I am sure is already in heaven.

Tom will always have a special place in my heart. Generous with his time, kind and truly concerned about those around him. My sense is that he would have made a very good priest, but that he was a better father, husband, and friend.

A life long friend, perhaps the most authentic and honest person I have known, respected for his daily commitment to family, friends and profession, and a true companion to all. It has been great, Tom, go in peace as always.

I worked at UPS with Tom back in the late '60's. Tom was probably the hardest working man there. He always had time to say hello and he was a friendly person. More, he was honest and focused. Tom was a friend to everyone and always gave his best. I am confident that he is now resting in the care of Our Lord. I plan to see him soon in heaven. May God keep Tom and all of his family in His hands and bring blessings to all. Rest in peace, dear friend. You were an inspiration to all of us.
