Doctor Tom Russell went on ahead of us Monday, August 4, following a four year battle with cancer. Tom is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Dr. Nona Chiampi Russell; his daughters, Dr. Katie Russell, a general surgery chief resident at the University of Utah, and Jackie Russell, a student in veterinary medicine at UC Davis; his sister, Susie Tompkins Buell, and nieces, Quincey Imhoff and Summer Tompkins Walker, as well as numerous other grand- nephews and nieces. Tom was the son of Floyd and Marianna Russell. A native of San Francisco, Tom attended Town School for Boys, The Thacher School, and the University of California, Berkeley. Tom received his medical degree from Creighton University and did his surgical internship at San Francisco General Hospital. His training was interrupted by service in the US Navy as a flight surgeon aboard the USS Ticonderoga in the Vietnam War and then aboard the USS Forrestal. He completed his surgical training at UCSF including a research year in pancreatic surgery under Dr. Maurice Mercardier in Paris, France. Upon completion of his training in 1975 he joined the practice of Drs Gallagher and Volpe in San Francisco specializing in general and Colon and Rectal Surgery. In 1979 he was appointed chief of surgery at Presbyterian Hospital which is now California Pacific Medical Center. He served in this capacity until 1999 when he was selected to serve as the Executive Director of the American College of Surgeons, a post he held until 2010. He will be honored by the ACS at their Clinical Congress in San Francisco in October with a Lifetime Achievement Award, only the third awarded in over 100 years of College history. To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.

Dr. Russell was my chief of surgery at Presbyterian when I was a resident. He leaves behind a legacy of colorful stories that will keep him immortal while we walk the earth and continue to do surgery.

Tom Russell, my senior resident, you are a true gentleman physician. It is my honor to have known you when I was a young intern and then a young physician (1967).
You will always be remembered by those you have touched, like me. You always had a smile for me whenever we met. It felt as if we were brothers in arms. I shall miss you brother.

I am saddened to learn, just coincidentally, of Dr. Russell's death. He was a great friend to my father, Dr. George Sheldon, and honored his passing by traveling all the way to Salina Kansas to participate in Dad's burial service there. The Russells were also extremely generous to us as a family by letting us stay in their home when my sister had surgery in SF. It was a great help for my dad to have a comfortable place to stay during a stressful time. I had the honor of having lunch with my Dad, and Drs. Lim and Blaisdell in February 2013, in SF. Dr. Russell also took out my appendix at SFGH when I was 13 while he was a resident! He was a great man and I wish his wife and daughters peace during a difficult time. I still miss my dad so much so know the pain you are enduring. best to you on behalf of the Sheldon family.

I had surgery with Dr. Russell many years ago and didn't have good insurance. I don't remember paying much at all for it and after reading about what a generous and fine human he was I am now thinking that he pulled some strings and I was not charged full price. Thank you, Dr. Russell!

I only met Tom Russell a few times, mainly at family weddings. We got along well! One morning while in the same hotel in New York for a wedding and while the rest of the relatives were eating breakfast Tom and I discovered each other in the fitness room. I looked at Tom and asked: Why are the two oldest guys running while the rest eat? He looked at me with that fantastic smile and said “Because were smarter health wise.” My hobby is still running and the next ½ marathon is on September 29th. Tom, I´ll run wearing a T-Shirt with your name on it for you!

Lieutenant Commander JG Tom Russell MD entered my life in December 1969, at a gala dinner at the Martinez hotel, in Cannes, on the French Riviera, given for the officers of USS Forestall.
He changed my life and became a dear friend of all whom he came into contact with in France, over 40 years ago.
Rarely have I encountered such a good man.
He devoted his to save, but he went way too quickly.

I am so sorry to hear of our loss of a wonderful physician, colleague and friend. I have been a nurse at CPMC for 34 years and there is not a kinder, more generous man than Tom Russell. He would always take the time to stop and say hello and acknowledge the care and concern we gave to his patients. He will definitely be missed.

A wonderful person. The world needs more like Tommy. I remember going to Stinson with Tommy, his sister Susie and his Mom in the 7th grade. We rode in that maroon Buick station wagon with the woody sides. In 1994, Tommy saved my sister's life. He was an unbelievable caregiver and physician.

We meet Tom at Tumbling McD Ranch, working for Archie McDougal. He became a good friend of ours. We enjoyed our visits when he came to the valley. Doc was responsible for helping me get into the Va hospital when I had kidney failure many years ago. We will always be grateful for his friendship. We send love and prayers to Nona and the family. We will miss our visits with Doc.

Tom was the best resident in our group, a gentleman, a colleague that I admired greatly. He had the people skills I never had. Did an A-P resection on my mother-in-law with a great longterm result. Tom represented the very best of what a surgeon could be.
