Reverend Anthony Paul LaTorre, Jr., aka Fr. Tony P. LaTorre, died in Oakland, CA on October 16, 2025.
Fr. Tony was born in San Francisco on December 31, 1948, to his parents Eleanor Marie Scafani and Anthony Paul LaTorre. He was the youngest sibling to Michael LaTorre and JoAnn Huber. A descendent of Italian fishermen, they settled in North Beach, San Francisco, in the fish and restaurant business. His father and uncle established Sabella & LaTorre restaurant in Fisherman's wharf. A Lincoln High School graduate, he was an avid Beatles fan. He presided over many of his family's baptisms, weddings, and funerals.
Tony enrolled at St. Mary's College following his religious calling, then became a brother with the Society of the Precious Blood. He worked at Cardinal Newman High School (Santa Rosa) and Moreau H.S. (Hayward). Seeking the priesthood, he attended St. Patrick's Seminary and was ordained at Our Lady of the Assumption Cathedral on May 31, 1997.
Fr. Tony loved caring for his doggies, cooking, baking, quilting, watching horror movies, visiting Disneyland and camping with friends.
He served at the parishes of St. Barnabas (Oakland), St. Edwards (Fremont), St. Isabella, St. Finn Barr, St. Charles (San Carlos), the Cathedral in SF, St. Philip the Apostle, St. Stephen, and St. Monica-St. Thomas the Apostle. They say he retired in 2022, but he went on visiting the sick, baptizing babies, and celebrating Mass.
Friends may visit after 4pm with his Vigil at 6pm, Monday, October 27, 2025 at Duggan's Serra Mortuary, 500 Westlake Ave, Daly City, CA. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10am, Tuesday, October 28, 2025, at St. Philip the Apostle Church, 725 Diamond St, San Francisco, CA. Limited parking in the schoolyard; Reception in the hall. Interment to follow at 2pm at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, 1500 Mission Rd., Colma, CA.
