Veronica McCarthy Obituary

Veronica McCarthy, Irish eyes were smiling in heaven on Wednesday morning as the McCarthy and Sullivan clans joyfully welcomed one of their own, Veronica McCarthy. First in line at the pearly gates were her handsome and much missed husband, Matt Sullivan; her parents Bill and Mary McCarthy; and her brother, Peter.

After valiantly fighting a 13-year battle with metastasized breast cancer, Veronica gently drifted off in her own bed shortly after midnight.

Grieving her loss, but happy that she is at peace, are her extended family, including her cherished sister and best friend, Lynn Aurelio, her loving brother-in-law, Rome, and their three sons, whom Veronica endlessly adored, Romey (Lotta and darling Simone), Michael and Zack. She also leaves her beloved brother John (Christina) and his two daughters, Alexandria and Sarah; brother Patrick; brother Bill (Jane and children); and sister Michael Mary Scafani.

She will also be missed by her cherished stepchildren Sean (Tammy) Sullivan, Kellie Sullivan and Megan (Bryan) Robledo and her much loved grandchildren Xavier, Shannon, Benjamin, Ashley and Christopher. Also her nephew, Michael Thomas (Anna) Scafani and their daughters, Maria and Giuliana, and nephew Victor Paul Scafani.

Over the years, Veronica made many friends and treasured each of them until the end.
She had lifelong friends from her old neighborhood, especially the Shea family. She had a large circle of friends from St. John's Ursuline H.S., including Carolyn Eriksson and her favorite teacher, Sister Maura Murphy, OSU. She also formed extraordinary friendships during her 30 years as a friend of Bill W. She made long-lasting friends through work, too, especially with Greg and Heidi Ingram who provided her with such loving care and support during her final months. Their help was invaluable. Their two sons Ryan and Conner were like grandsons to Matt and Veronica over the years and they loved them dearly.

Veronica grew up in the Crocker Amazon district, just blocks away from the world famous Mel's Drive-In. After graduating from high school, she worked at a variety of secretarial jobs, quickly moving up the ladder until she broke through the glass ceiling on Wall Street and became a registered stock broker. She worked for several brokerage firms, such as Bear Stearns, The Shemano Group and Empire Financial. She was currently a Vice President, Private Client Group, with Wunderlich Securities in San Francisco's financial district.

Veronica eagerly anticipated the annual McCarthy/Sullivan gathering at the Russian River. It was always the highlight of her year. This warm and friendly family, however, turned into an aggressive, competitive pack as they played the grand finale, men vs. women, cut-throat game of charades. She also loved New York City and treasured her trips there with Matt.

She was a devout Catholic, a silent and generous contributor to many causes, an avid reader and the most fashionably, well dressed woman any of us knew. Most of all, she devoted her life to family, friends and sponsees. She deeply loved each and every one of them, felt their pain, shared their joys and reminded them frequently that "it's not fingers or toes" and "there are no big deals". She will be deeply missed!

The viewing and vigil service will be held Tuesday evening at 7:00pm with visitation starting at 6:00pm. The funeral mass will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00am. Both services will be at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, 180 Harrison Ave., Sausalito.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made, in her memory, to the American Cancer Society, 601 Montgomery St., Suite 650, San Francisco, CA 94111.

In a short time I've known Veronica when we were working at Bear Stearns, I've grown to love her as a person. She was generous in giving advise to me as a young mother going through some rough times in my life. I am saddened that she has passed away. Our dear Lord, will welcome her in his kingdom.

Dear Veronica: Your service yesterday was earth moving for me. I knew this had to be written and choreographed by you. The flowers, the operatic singer and songs, the eulogy (Armani casual day comes to mind)and a packed audience of family and friends was exquisite.

I have your picture from the service on my mantle with a tiny bouquet of spring flowers in a glass from Harrod's. How appropo~

All of our love to you as you set out on your new journey!

Dearest Friend--those words just begin to describe what Veronica meant to me and to my family. I have never met a lady like Veronica and doubt I ever will. Her generosity and grace are inspiring. I am grateful for the gift of her friendship and the wisdom and experience she shared. I see her influence and spirit in those she touched and I know she will always be with us.
Our hearts go out to her beautiful family.

Veronica: I sat behind you and Matt in church for several years until one day we finally introduced ourselves. You were always absolutely elegant and you and Matt were the most handsome couple. After I got to know you, you were always a breath of fresh air; always a smile on your face and a spring in your step. Whenever we met weather it was after mass or on the streets of Mill Valley it was always fun to chat. I was always so honored that you wanted me to take your family pictures. You will be sadly missed by our Star of the Sea family. But the Irish eyes are all smiling now you have entered the pearly gates. May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind always be at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, and rains fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of His hand. Veronica: You are our shining star.

Veronica reached out to me at an exceedingly difficult time in my life, many years ago, and I never, ever forgot her kindness...I feel so fortunate to have seen her just 3 weeks ago in a church basement, and it was a joyful reunion for us both...She told me, in the most accepting way, that she currently had hospice care and was "ready to let go"...I felt at peace, knowing that she was in a state of surrender and not of fear...I feel so fortunate to have known her...

You will be forever missed, but never forgotten. You were the smiling Irish eyes of our lives. God bless you and keep you, God make His presence to shine upon you and give you peace... now and forever more.

Auntie V. was such a strong, unique, and giving person. She was not only giving with unconditional love, but with her great wisdom. It was her wisdom that she imparted on me during a very difficult time in my life that helped me get through it all. She was so right when she said "there are no big deals." I try to remember those words she told me every time I feel there are nothing but "big deals" I am grateful to have had my life touched by this Angel on Earth and we can all be grateful to have this Angel in Heaven looking after us. All my love to you Auntie V. Thank you so much for being the person you were!

I never met Veronica, I live in Oklahoma. My son, Kiel, met Veronica through Andrew. I heard stories from him about her and what an astonishing women she was and how she showed him, compassion towards others, dignity, strength, class, fashion, joy, and love through her actions. He told me stories about the 4th of July gathering and how much fun everyone had, all the wonderful food and love shared by her and her whole family (thank you all). I was hoping that I would get to meet this woman that had made such an impact on my son's life; it will be at another time. Thank you Veronica for loving and caring for my son! May you Rest in Peace! Sending our condolences to her entire family from the Great Plains of Oklahoma.
