Passed away on December 7, 2013 peacefully in his home with his daughter by his side. He was born on September 10, 1918 in San Francisco, California and grew up in North Beach. A third generation San Franciscan, Walter was one of five brothers (Artie, Rialto, Frank, and Virgil) and a sister (Flora). He went to Galileo High School where he met the love of his life, Johanna. They were married in 1940. After the war broke out, he was stationed in Bremerton, Washington in the Navy where he was a corpsman. After the war he went to work for a dental lab where he learned his trade as a dental lab technician working till he retired at the age of 62.
Walter and Johanna had a daughter, Barrie, in 1946. He was a self-taught harmonica player and always carried it with him to "play whenever the mood struck him." He enjoyed playing at senior centers and convalescent homes on a regular basis well into his 90's. Walter's favorite pastime was trap and skeet shooting. He continued to enjoy shooting, as well as teaching, well into his retirement years at the Pacific Rod and Gun Club. He had many wonderful years and met some incredible people through his gun club membership. Walter is preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Johanna and survived by his brother, Virgil, his daughter, Barrie, and his grandson, Nick. He was 95.
Donations may be made to Hospice by the Bay in lieu of flowers.
A private burial ceremony will take place; however, a celebration event of Walter's life will be announced in January.

a Belated condolence....Such a nice man. I was his delivery boy during the summer in about 1975. Drove his blue chevy pick up like an idiot.... but was given "permission" since I had to get the relined denture to the 450 Sutter bldg from Ocean ave in 15 minutes. His partial denture frameworks were legendary. RIP

Walt was a patient in Dr. Ortner's dental office for many, many years. As a former dental lab tech myself, I had a great respect for Walt. May his memory be a blessing.

I am sad to learn of the loss of this fine man. Walt was a sincere friend to me. I will always treasure our many years of friendship. He taught me to shoot skeet, was among the first to wish me well when my children were born and even taught my boys skeet. I will honor him by being more like him, his kindness and goodwill towards all.

Walter is the optitome of a true gentleman with the love for family and friends that is truly an inspiration. For the past few years, Walter joined our annual New Years Day get together and we had such a blast! He came with such positive energy and we always looked forward to his harmonica playing. His playbook was incredible but he could play each and every one!! Wow! We truly missed him this past new year but we felt his spirit among us. My mother and I were truly blessed to have known him....he will always be in our hearts.

Barrie,
Missed receiving Walter's Christmas card and his yearly news. My husband used to shoot with Walter when he visited San Francisco. I am Diane Lipman Baxter and my mother was Arline Lipman. We will both truly miss Walter. He was a true gentleman and always so caring and thoughtful.

My husband, Gunard & I, have known Walt for years. Both of us are past Presidents of the Pacific Rod & Gun Club and treasured Walt's friendship and support of the Club. Walt played his harmonica at our Easter breakfast for years. He always serenaded me with "Jeanine, I Dream of Lilac Time" as my Dad named me Jeanine because of that song. He will be truly missed.

Walter took me shooting as a young teen at the Rod and Gun Club. My children called him Uncle Walt per his request and got a bag of chocolate every Halloween. We shared gophers between our lawns and Walt always had a solution for getting rid of them. Walter will be greatly missed and I am honored to consider him a great friend and neighbor!! God Bless You Walter, you will be in my prayers.

My deepest condolences. Walt honored us by saying the eulogy for my late father-in-law (his gun club friend George Tokugawa). Walt was a gentle giant of a man with a heart to match. His kindness and smiles enriched us all. His harmonica seemed to be a part of him and he played it well. They don't make men like him any more. He was one of a kind and will be missed.
