Walter Kaufman Obituary

Walter Vane Kaufman 65, died unexpectedly the morning of Mon, April 17, 2006. He was in Mendocino abalone diving, a sport he very much loved to do, when he had a cardiac event. Walt was born in San Francisco to Herbert C. and Olive G. (Vane) Kaufman. Justice Herbert Kaufman worked in the 1st District Court of Appeals, San Francisco from 1939 to 1963. Olive Kaufman moved her family to Palo Alto in 1948 where Walt attended local public schools and graduated from Cubberley High. He then went to Foothill Junior College where he installed an FM radio station for the college. He transferred to University of Nevada, Reno and then to Chico State where he graduated in 1967. He made his home in Mountain View where he worked for Lockheed, Litton, Loral and many other local companies. Walt had retired from his career as a hybrid laser engineer in the San Jose area, to his mountain cabin in Big Trees Village, Calaveras County about 10 years ago. Walt will be missed by the many people who passed through his life. He enjoyed Civil Air Patrol, amateur radio, fly fishing, wood working, SCUBA and free diving, snow skiing and Jeep Geo-caching. Walt is survived by his two daughters, Kerry Friedrichs and her husband George and their daughter Keris; and Kristina Kaufman, all of Reno, NV. He is also survived by his elder brother Herb Kaufman and family of San Francisco and his twin sister, Kate Cornwall, of Woodland. The Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 6th at 1pm at the Timm Residence: 21150 Rakstad Road, San Jose, CA 95120. In lieu of flowers, please send any donations to the American Heart Association, Toulumne/Calaveras Division, 1212 W. I've known Walt for 28 years. Working for him a great deal of those years. He was a wonderful boss. I hadn't seen him since he left Loral, but spoke with him recently in the past months. He'll be greatly missed. Sorry I didn't get to see him. We spoke about a get together with all who worked with him at Loral. My deepest sympathy to the family.

I am very shocked, as well as saddened @ hearing Of Walt's death. I met Walt probably in the 80's. We worked together @ Applied Technology (Litton), and also Space System Loral. I enjoyed the fact that I could always talk to Walt about work and if I had a problem or complaint, he wouldn't say anything to me then but he would take care of everything.I will miss him.

walt was a great guy. i met him when working at the dive shop where he came to try out equipment and tailor it to himself. a smart man at that. i did some diving with him and not only was he a great diver but also a smart diver. we used to meet early in the morning for breakfast down in gilroy and head down to monterey to dive real early in the morning. often he would go run errands after the dive or go to carmel while he was down that way. he loved the ocean and i think it is wonderful a man could be doing what he loved when the time came. i know few of us will be doing so ourselves. he was always really laid back and just overall friendly. he even came by my new place of work just to say hello. what a guy, he will be missed. i wish i could have diver with him just one more time. maybe he's found himself a place for himself where he can dive all day and night now. he was always smiling when he was at the ocean.
