Yasuko Sakamoto, a long-time resident of San Francisco, passed away peacefully at the age of 88. She was the fifth of seven children of Yasuhe and Hatsune Sakamoto. Yasuko was born on the Bancroft Ranch in Concord, CA, where her father was a foreman. She attended Oak Grove Elementary School in Concord, but during the Depression, Yasuko and her family left for Kumamoto, Japan to live. She returned to the Bay Area following WWII and worked for Sumitomo Bank and Safeway from which she retired. Yasuko was an avid knitter and quilter and traveled world-wide with her sister, Tsuneko Sakamoto. She was an loyal fan of the SF Giants and could not be drawn from the television during a Giant's game. She is survived by her sister Tsuneko Sakamoto of San Francisco and many nieces and nephews. Thanks to the kind staff at Kokoro Assisted Living who lovingly cared for Yasuko during her residency. Service will be held at the Hotel Kabuki. 1625 Post St., San Francisco on Saturday June 15 at 11:00, with lunch to follow. Interment will take place at Oakmont Memorial Park, Lafayette. I first met Ms. Sakamoto in the mid 80's in a sewing class, while I was in between jobs. It was her warm, welcoming presence that kept me thinking of her throughout the years, long after the sewing class of Mr. Mark's closed. One afternoon on Clement St., about seven years ago, I was fortunate to meet up with Ms. Sakamoto again. Such a lovely lady! Genuine and soft spoken, beautiful inside and out. I will remember her with much fondness.
