Donald Holtz Obituary
1936 - 2022 Forever in Our Hearts Donald Lewis Holtz, 85, went to be with his Heavenly Father on August 7, 2022 surrounded by his family. Donald was a loving and devoted husband, father and Papo who fought a long and arduous battle with cancer. He was born in Chicago, Illinois on October 25, 1936, to Magdalena and Lou Holtz. He attended Lane Tech High School in Chicago. After high school, Don attended Michigan State University. In 1956, he joined the US Army's Security Agency as a Teletype Interceptor. He spent three years in the Army with two of those years stationed in Japan. He married the love of his life, Sharon Bertram, on June 4th, 1960. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to California to pursue a career opportunity in Los Angeles. Don and Sharon settled in West Covina, California in 1974 where they raised their children, Lori and Guy. Don worked for Pacific Telephone for over 30 years before retiring as Vice President of Marketing. Don's West Covina Police career started in 1973 where he worked in the Patrol Division. In 1974, he was promoted to the rank of Reserve Sergeant, and promoted again to Reserve Lieutenant in 1979. Don took a break from service in 1983, only to return in 1995. Don's career included working in the Community Relations Division where he taught the popular D.A.R.E Program to elementary children in the West Covina Unified District. Don was also a long time member of the West Covina Planning Commission before he was appointed as the Commissioner in January 2016 . Don loved traveling the world with his wife Sharon. They were regulars with the cruise lines and traveled to many countries. When he was home, Don was an avid golfer and Corvette fanatic. Both Don and Sharon were active members of the California Corvette Club, Elks Club, and he was a member of the Barn Boys at Hurst Ranch. Don is preceded in death by his wife, Sharon (2021); He is survived by his sister Carole (Olan) Wheeler; Children: Lori (Ray) Wilds and Guy (Kyoko) Holtz; Grandchildren: Ashlee (Nick) Mehrbrodt, Allison Don (Darren) Torres, Joseph Wilds and Jake Holtz; Great-Grandchildren: Charlotte Rose Mehrbrodt and Bo Austin Torres. The funeral service will be held at Saint Christopher's Catholic Church in West Covina, California on August 19th, 2022 at 10:00 am. A celebration of life reception will be announced concluding the mass. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made on his behalf to the City of Hope in Duarte, California. A private interment will be held for the family at a later date. "For God so loved the world that He gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life."
