Philip Swan Obituary

Philip Vernon Swan of Pasadena, CA passed away peacefully on December 7, 2017. He was 88 years old.

Phil was born on March 25, 1929 in Pasadena CA. He grew up in San Marino, CA, lived in South Pasadena for 54 years, and most recently was a resident of Pasadena. He was a graduate of Pomona College and Stanford University School of Business. Phil had a successful career as an investment couselor and entrepreneur, eventually founding his own investment counsel firm in Pasadena, now Clifford Swan Investment Counselors. In the 1970’s he cofounded Books On Tape, which made it possible to listen to books while driving. Phil continued working into his eighties as a private trustee. In addition to his professional life, Phil was extremely active in the community. Over the years he gave his time and leadership skills to the South Pasadena Community Redevelopment Association, The Oneonta Club Scholarship Committee, Oneonta Congregational Church, Los Angeles Rotary, The Economic Roundtable, The Huntington Library Board of Overseers, The Braille Institute and Forest Lawn Boards of Directors, and Scripps College where he served on the Board of Trustees.

Phil had a lust for life and had many hobbies and passions. Among them were a keen interest in history and his collection of autographed pictures of U.S. political and business leaders. Phil was a dedicated baseball and USC football fan. He attended an impressive 73 Rose Bowl games. Phil traveled extensively and orchestrated special grandparent trips with his grandchildren. Phil had countless friends and thoroughly enjoyed getting together with people over a meal at a good restaurant. He will be remembered for his intense work ethic, boundless energy, dedication to family, generosity, sense of humor, and as a dispenser of advice and wisdom.

Phil is survived by his wife, Kay Schwarberg Swan and daughter Karen Steen and son-in-law Eric Steen of Kansas City, Missouri, daughter Sara Swan of Los Angeles, and son Philip A. Swan of Pasadena. He leaves 7 grandchildren; Emily, Audrey and Madeline Steen, Bridget and Roy Wexman, and Craig and Arden MacLaren-Swan. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Sally Preston Swan.

A memorial service is scheduled for Tuesday, December 19th, at 9:30AM at San Marino Community Church. A reception at the Valley Hunt Club in Pasadena will follow. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Philip’s remarkable life. Donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, alz.org.

Phil was an exceptional person. He calmed me when I came for financial advice after my father's passing. Phil showed me a way forward with my mother and her finances. He understood what was needed to provide her an orderly life.
Phil made a big difference in my life.

Philip Swan was my boss, my mentor and my friend. He had an infectious enthusiasm and boundless energy that inspired everyone around him. He was truly one of a kind, and his loss will be deeply felt by all who knew him. I first met Phil in 1989 when I interviewed for a junior position in his small, eponymous investment advisory company. I knew nothing about investments, but he sure made the investment counsel business sound interesting. He talked passionately of the relationships he had built with his clients, becoming a trusted family advisor, not just a money manager. I was carried away with his enthusiasm and signed up on the spot. Over the succeeding years the company grew from strength to strength, and I embarked on a career path I would never have dreamed of without Phil's support and wise advice at every step of the way. I count myself truly fortunate to have known this wonderful man, and I extend my deepest sympathy to Kay and the family.

I enjoyed Phil so much. We worked together on initiating a Planned Giving Program at the Pasadena Community Foundation. He was a lovely man.
