When I was a kid I would often recruit my dad to play GI Joe and Star Wars with me. Gladly, he would kneel down and take up an action figure, not really knowing how to proceed in our mock battle for supremacy. As many of you were familiar with his personality, you might guess, playing “make believe was not my father's forte. The game would last a few moments and he would then retire to his room, to his preferred activity of reading a book while munching on chips and salsa. Well that always seemed like a fine alternative to me, so I would eagerly follow after, poaching a few bites for myself, of which he gladly shared his bounty. Sharing chips and salsa in some ways was our own little father and son moment. He was a particular fan of Pace Picanti. I'm not sure if this was for its taste or rather the fact that you could get a gallon for under $5. I would hungrily take a few bites before departing to wait for the traditional American feast prepared every evening by the diligent hand of my mother, Connie. Common dishes included meat loaf, lasagna, spaghetti, pork chops, chicken chow mien, and on those very rare occasions; strawberry short cake.

Spending a Saturday at the San Gabriel Valley Gun Club was another way that he and I shared some quality time and bonded as father and son. As a child I desperately wanted a bb gun. So for Christmas he bought me, or rather Santa gave me, a 22 rifle, which seemed like a very fair compromise to my initial request! We would spend the day putting holes in targets, refreshing ourselves at lunch with hot dogs and Cactus Coolers. It all was very thrilling to me and it felt like privileged time between father and son.

He was also an enthusiastic participant in all things Cub Scouts or Indian Guides, as long as it involved building something. He was fond of camping as long as he could tow along his beloved camper. He didn't much care for the beach and would wear pants in 95 degree weather. He said he hated the way shorts rubbed on his legs. For all of these reasons, my Dad was unique. He was representative of a bygone era. An era of shared sacrifice, of tradition, and of family. I cherish the things my Dad taught me. Not through direct instruction but simply by the way he lived. He was a champion of self reliance, endeavoring to fix anything that broke in order to keep the family unit moving forward in life. He could always be counted on in a pitch and gladly drive in the middle of the night to the aid of any one of us.

I don't see this as a sorrowful event. I see it as a celebration. A celebration of a life well lived. My father, Warren Scott, said he moved out to California from Cleveland, OH to escape the brutal winters of the east. Settling in the LA basin he proceeded to build a life for himself, of which I am a product of that creation. I will always love, honor, and cherish his memory.
