Charles Pauly Obituary

Dr. Charles "Chas" Roman Pauly

Fishersville, VA - Charles "Chas" Roman Pauly, 71, husband of Susan Marie (Vande Loo) Pauly, passed away Saturday, April 13, at his home in Fishersville, Virginia. Chas was born April 16, 1947 in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, son of the late Leon and Estelle (Kummer) Pauly.

He received his bachelor's degree from St. Norbert's College in DePere, WI and his M.D. degree from Loyola Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago. He completed his residency in Dermatology at the University of Michigan. Chas and Sue were married in 1970 and settled in Waynesboro, VA in 1976. With Sue he raised four children, founded Blue Ridge Dermatology and became a pillar in the community. Chas served everyone who had the blessing to meet him. He donated time to the Augusta Regional Clinic, worked with Boy Scout Troop 25, St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, and was one of the founders of Blue Ridge Soccer Association. He was the foundational development chairman for the Valley Alliance for Education, now known as The Community Foundation where he was currently a Board Member.

He was always up for spontaneous adventure, and loved to travel and meet people. He spent time with his grandchildren who eagerly took part in "Grandpa School". When not serving others, he enjoyed time with friends, skiing, playing golf, tennis and cards, biking, kayaking, sailing, gardening, telling stories and playing practical jokes.

In addition to his loving wife Sue of 48 years, Chas is survived by three sons, one daughter, and nine grandchildren: Christopher Charles Pauly, wife Leigh Ann (Pawlick) Pauly, and daughters Naya and Geneva of Arvada, CO; Dana Marie Pauly, husband Gavin Connor and daughters Riddley, Rosalyn, and Hazel of Earlysville, VA; Michael Charles Pauly, wife Betty (Shumaker) Pauly, and son Grant and daughter Lauren of Mukilteo, WA; and Andrew Charles Pauly, wife Rachel Troyer, and son Solomon Fox and daughter Violet of Ferrum, VA. He is also survived by sister Kathryn Pauly Morgan of Toronto, Ontario, brother David of Plymouth, WI, and brothers John and Mark of Littleton, CO.

Visitation will be held Wednesday (4/17) from 6 to 8 pm at McDow Funeral Home, 1701 W Main Street, Waynesboro VA 22980.

A Catholic funeral service will be held Thursday (4/18) at 11am at Saint John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 344 Maple Avenue, Waynesboro VA 22908.

In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes a donation to Saint John the Evangelist Catholic church, the Waynesboro Area Refuge Ministry (WARM) or Habitat for Humanity.

I just looked to make an appointment with him as I had a cyst the size of a marble on my forehead and you cant see any scar where he removed it. I had had another person remove another cyst the size of a pencil eraser and I have a one inch long scar which I look at everyday as its next to my mouth. Dr Pauly really was an expert in his field and Im so sad not to have him as my doctor. My thoughts are with all of his friends family and patients.

Sue and family,

Whether it was designing golf courses for wiffle ball chipping or playing basketball on 10 foot to 8 1/2 foot baskets our neighborhood was fun. Head to Vollrath Park day at beach and jetties or canning cars and putting for nickels after 18 at Riverdale. I was better but he had an in with coach Bump Jones. Enjoyed visits in Sheboygan and one time you got out to Arizona. Ethel catch us canning it was so many Hail Marys and I wasn't Catholic.
A life well lived.

Chas was a great man. We will miss him dearly. He was fun to be around and very kind. I played tennis with him frequently. He had a wicked drop shot. He was also my skin doctor and took very good care of me. I will miss his humor and good sportsmanship.

So sad to read the passing of an old neighbor who came from a beautiful and respected family. Played basketball at Van Abel's down the street from the Pauly house on Vollrath Blvd with Chas His parents were all class all humble people. God bless him and his family.

When I became a church youth minister Dr Pauly and his wife where very supportive and offered much help to make the experience of faith joyful. One time Dr Pauly gave me his van to drive a youth group to a retreat. No questions. His generosity and support was always there anytime I or others needed it. He was an inspiration with his advice and hands on but most of all his sharing of his Faith. As a friend we had many conversations and shared ideas.

All of us kids in the neighborhood played board
games at his house when the weather was to bad
to play outside. His mom always had treats for his friends. And as Glenn said good times were had
by all. RIP Doctor. Now is your time to explore
the Universe....

I loved the stories of his mother! He would share them at the end of my appt. He was in my thoughts that first Mother's Day w/o her, & I regret not sending him a card. He mailed me a hand drawn map to Burke's Garden once after telling me how we needed to visit there as it was so beautiful. I was touched that he took the time to do that as he only knew me thru his office. Our thoughts & prayers are with the family.

Such a loss for his family and his extended family being the community. I enjoyed him as a Doctor and as his stories of Wisconsin and how he used wood mostly for heat. Always doing for others and not thinking about it. You will be missed. Such a tragedy.

We are grateful for the time we knew Chas through the Trail Angel network. What a fun, energetic guy! Hikers got a treat to ride with him. His impact on this community and the region cannot be measured. Our sincerest condolences to the Pauly family.

So sorry to hear about Charles. I will always remenber the good times we had ( Charles, John, Richter, Kasey and others) playing golf at Riverdale, basketball at the Van Ables, catching pollywogs at Vollrath Park, and the snowball fights and forts we used to build in the winter at his house. My thoughts and prayers are with his entire family.

So sorry for your loss. I went to him for several years and he was such a nice person.

There is no doubt, our community became a better place when the Pauly family became a part of it. It was an honor for us to help rear our family often in proximity to theirs. We appreciate the doctoring skills of Dr. Pauly as many in the family received care at his practice. As a teacher, I will always remember the slide shows he shared with us at Ladd Elementary and the many contributions made there and to SDHS by the entire Pauly family. Chris, Dana, Michael, and Andrew, we know you are carrying on the positive, parenting role modeling you received in your growing years from your caring and energetic dad. Sue, you were so very loved and cherished, evident always. To the whole family, we were so blessed to have shared parenting years with you; so many memories, some to laugh about, others to still wonder about. Job well done, all of you! We know you will keep up the legacy left by your dad, enriching any community in which you live. We grieve with you but KNOW that Chase is now enjoying his reward. Glory to God!
With deepest sympathy,

Susan, I am so sorry to hear of Chaz's passing. What a great man he was! I enjoyed getting to know you both on the Italy trip. Chaz was also my father's doctor and was so gentle with an aging dementia patient. My God's hands lift up you and your family in this sad time.

April 16, 2019

I was one of Dr Pauly's first patients when he came to Waynesboro to practice medicine. He always teased me about being his "oldest" patient. I greatly appreciated his kind and compassionate treatment over the years. Not to mention his quirky sense of humor! I was saddened to hear of his tragic accident. My sincerest sympathies to the entire family. I know he will be deeply missed. May you find comfort in your faith and many happy memories.
God Bless

I was so sorry to hear about Chaz passing. I played tennis with him a few times at Augusta Health. He was such a nice man, he always spoke when I saw him and always was very nice to me. I know he will be missed by the tennis community and everyone who came in contact with him
