Johanna (Joey) Klein-Wassink
Joey (Johanna Everdena Rozenboom) Klein-Wassink was born May 12, 1917, in a farmhouse near New Sharon, Iowa to a Dutch immigrant family. She was the ninth of twelve surviving children born to Geurt (George) and Maatje (Martha) Van Snippenberg Rozenboom. As a child, she moved frequently from farm to farm in the Pella Iowa area, and thus, moved from country school to country school. She graduated from the 8th grade and spent her next years working on the family farm. Dutch was her first language, but she quickly learned English. As a youth, she also taught herself to read Dutch, design and sew clothing and play the piano.
After taking care of the farm, her parents, and many of her newly born nieces and nephews, she headed off to Grand Rapids where she graduated from The Reformed Bible Institute (now Kuiper College). She has put her doctrinal training to use ever since, leading many Bible groups and discipling individuals. She completed her high school training in downtown Chicago and then went on to graduate from Kletzing College, Oskaloosa, Iowa, with a teacher's license. She taught in Oskaloosa Christian and Sheboygan Christian schools. On June 3rd, 1955, she was united in marriage with Henry Klein-Wassink and moved to Sheboygan. They had one daughter, Nancy, and they also raised a foster son, Thomas Landgraf.
Throughout her life, she enjoyed doing many kinds of crafts, sewing, gardening and reading. She enjoyed teaching Sunday School and DVBS for many years. She led Bible discussion groups and was the church janitor at Calvin Christian Reformed Church, where she was a charter member. One thing that she has always felt especially blessed to do was travel. Except for Oregon and Hawaii, she has visited every U.S. state, most of the Canadian Provinces, and many European countries.
Following Henry's death in April 2006, she moved to Pine Haven Residential Christian Home in Sheboygan Falls, where she was a resident until her time of death. During her years there, she read daily from her Bible, read three books a week, and played Scrabble. Over the years, different places and faces have come and gone, but her walk with God, which began as a child, remained constant.
Those left to honor her life are her daughter, Nancy (Thomas ) LeMahieu of Sheboygan and their two sons, Nathan (Julie) of Highland Park, IL and Jeremy (Mary) of Stockbridge, GA; a great-granddaughter Caroline, and a great-grandson Malachi; and her foster son, Thomas (Mary) Landgraf of Sheboygan Falls. Of her original family, Joey leaves the following sisters and brothers and their spouses: Gysbert and Ada Rozenboom of Grand Rapids, MI; Martha and Bill De Boef of Pella, IA; Gerald and Clarissa Rozenboom of Oskaloosa, IA; a brother-in-law, Arthur De Boef and his wife, Velma, of New Sharon, IA. She also leaves behind three sisters-in-law; Grace Klein-Wasink of Hudsonville, MI; Dorothy Klein-Wassink of Sheboygan; and Alice Klein-Wassink of Sheboygan; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Henry, Joey was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers and a sister, who died in infancy; and the following sisters and brothers: Gertie Wassink, Jennie Wouterse, John Rozenboom, Joe Rozenboom, Lucy Groenendyk, Cobie Fynaardt, Gerrit Rozenboom, and Jeanetta De Boef; and her brothers-in-law: Fred Klein-Wassink, John Klein-Wassink, and Frans Klein-Wassink.
