In Loving Memory of Helen Laverne (McCabe) Ash who passed away peacefully Wednesday, June 18, 2025, after a long illness with Alzheimer's.
Helen was born in Shelbyville, on Sept. 16, 1942, to Alfred R. and Helena McCabe. She was a graduate of Shelbyville High School in 1962 and received a Diploma from Indiana Business College for Junior Secretarial Courses. Helen was employed by Civil Service in United States Government in 1964, working 33 years within the United States Air Force and U.S. Immigration and Customs, retiring in September 1997. During her career she lived in Ohio, North Dakota, California, Maryland and Texas. But her "home" was always the family farm in Rushville.
Helen was a member of Eastern Star for 60 years, initiated in Shelbyville in April 1965. She was a part of Spring Chapter in Texas, then to Riverside Chapter in 2014 and then Ungava Chapter from 2023 until her passing. Helen served many offices including Worthy Matron in 2009. Her favorite office was Organist. She also served as a District Grand Deputy in 2012.
Helen enjoyed being with family and friends, crafting, sewing, reading and playing the piano and organ.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents Alfred R. and Helena McCabe, and granddaughter Mary Williams.
Helen is survived by her sister, Carol McCabe and her brother, Alfred R. McCabe II and wife, Rita; her children, son Mike Ash and wife Tari, daughter Cathy Zabloudil and husband Wes, and son Chris Ash and wife Tammy; six grandchildren, Crista Miller, Jennifer Plant, Danielle Meza, Wesley Zabloudil, Kevin Ash, Corey Ash; and eight great-grandchildren, Maylin, Nicholas, Antony, Morgan, Taylor, Gracie, Gabriela and Genevieve; her boyfriend, Frank Durante and many other cousins, nieces, nephews and loved ones.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Evergreen Masonic Center in Riverside, CA on Saturday, July 19, at 11 a.m.
The family would like to express our thanks for the wonderful help and care given by Inspire Hospice and Riverside Memory Care.

I have fond memories of our childhood together, living on the Columbus Rd. in Shelbyville, IN., and riding the school bus together to Shelby Twp. grade school.

I am so sorry for your loss. Helen was a neighborhood Mom to many of us kids on Debbie Lane.
Helen you will be missed by many. I am thankful that I knew you and for the years of love and support to me.
