Janet Marilyn Hunt Shutt, of Gwynneville, IN, went home to be with the Lord on November 22, 2025.
She was born on July 22, 1937, in Knightstown, IN, into the Quaker family of the late Sharon Ellsworth and Esther (Moore) Hunt. She was the sixth generation to be raised on the farm that her Hunt ancestors settled. Her home church was Walnut Ridge Friends Meeting.
Janet graduated from Carthage High School in 1955 and then attended Ball State Teachers College in Muncie, where she received a BS and an MA in Elementary Education. She began her teaching career at Graham Elementary School in Rushville and later taught at Arlington Elementary School in Arlington. When Janet started her family, she stayed home to raise her three children. After that, she worked at Overseas Council International, a mission organization in Indianapolis for 15 years.
She was married to Russell O. Shutt, Jr. on August 12, 1962, and he survives. Janet is also survived by her children, Timothy M. Shutt of Gwynneville, Heather A. (Jay) McCants of Bagdad, KY, and Nathan A. (Brandi) Shutt of the Morristown area; nine grandchildren, Olivia and Isaac McCants, Isaiah (Sydney) Shutt, Emma (Damon) Estes, and Eli, Gabriel (Ally), Naomi, Gideon, and Lydia Shutt; four great-grandchildren, Levi and Katherine Shutt, Christopher and Maximus Estes; four brothers, Stephen and John in the Carthage area, David of Crestwood, KY, and Daniel on the Hunt farm, along with a sister, Sarah Jane Hunt Pierce of Salem, OH.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm on Saturday, November 29, 2025, at Walnut Ridge Friends Meetinghouse, 8956 W. 800 N, Carthage, IN, with the funeral service to follow at 12:00 pm. Dr. D. Michael Henderson will officiate the service. Janet will be laid to rest at Asbury Cemetery, north of Morristown, IN.
