Cheryl Wray Obituary

WILMINGTON - Cheryl Hubbard Wray died May 19, 2013, at her home.

She was surrounded by her family, following a courageous, hard-fought, two-year battle against lung cancer.

Born in Shelby, NC, she was the daughter of the late J.A. and Ruby D. Hubbard. A graduate of Shelby High School, she studied Art & Design at Appalachian State University, and Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota, Fla.
Cheryl is survived by her husband, David L. Wray, three daughters and their families; Nicole Wray, Keely W. Hesmer, and husband Taylor, Sr., of Wilmington; Heather W. Huberty and hus-band Paul, of West Chester, PA; her grandchildren, Zachary, Haley and Zia Huberty of West Chester, PA, and Sidney and Taylor Hesmer, Jr. of Wilmington; a brother, J. Michael Hubbard and wife Karen of Shelby, NC. Cheryl is also survived by a large number of aunts, uncles and cousins living in the Cleveland, Lincoln and Gaston county communities.

In their 49 year marriage, Cheryl and David had the opportunity to live in various places within the US. Cheryl's love of art and design was a constant, regardless of their home location. Cheryl's passion for art and design was expressed in many forms; a residential and commercial interior designer; a private school art teacher; a set designer for children's theater groups; a fash-ion show runway designer for community charity events; partnerships in several private businesses ranging from managing retail quilt shops, quilt design and construction instruction, to a custom-design wedding cake business.
Cheryl became interested in quilted art while living in PA and WI, and was a part of that art form community in Wilmington.
Although she appreciated traditional quilt designs, her love of color and contemporary design heavily influenced her creations. In addition to bed quilts, fabric wall art, handbags with quilted elements, and various clothing items were a small part of her creations. Within the Wilmington community, she participated in creating hand-crafted works for local hospital groups, and the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Life Care Center. Some of her art work has been displayed in local museums, and can be seen displayed in her children's homes. Grandson TJ's wall quilt, titled "Under a Big Top", was judged Best of Show at the Quilters by the Sea Quilt Guild, Annual Quilt Show in 2005. She was always involved in a variety of local charity projects throughout her life, giving back where she could to the various communities in which she lived.

At Cheryl's request, no public memorial services are planned.

Memorials can be made to: The North Carolina Lung Cancer Partnership, 4000 Blue Ridge Rd, Suite 170, Raleigh, NC 27612- PH: 919-784-0410 [email protected] or Duke Cancer patient Support Program, DUMC, Box 3139, Durham, NC 27710-PH: 919-684-4497 www.gifts.duke.edu/cancersupport or Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Life Care Center, 1414 Physicians Dr., Wilmington, NC 28401- PH: 910-796-7900.
