Gary Dean VanDenHeuvel, 67, of Crystal Valley, passed away Monday, Dec. 25 following a long battle with cancer. Gary was born Sept. 4, 1956 to Christian and Evelyn (Hoffman) VanDenHeuvel. He was one of six children and spent his early childhood in Ferrysburg where attended St. Mary's Catholic School. In 1967, the family moved to Montague where he graduated from Montague High School in 1975.

Gary is survived by his son, Joshua Dean VanDenHeuvel of Crystal Valley; step-daughter, Leigha McCarrick of Orford, Tasmania; brothers, Lyle (Nancy) VanDenHeuvel and Thomas (Dorene) VanDenHeuvel; sisters, Kris VanDenHeuvel and Elaine Northcott; and brother-in-law, Dale Fogg; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by both of his parents; his sister, Shirley Fogg; Skip Zatzke (mother of Josh and Leigha) and his beloved dog, Lucky.

Gary spent time working at DuPont and Silverstreet/Media Technologies as a sawyer/cabinetmaker. Gary enjoyed fishing, hunting and sitting in his garage enjoying Crystal Valley sunsets. He lived on the family farm and enjoyed spending time with his friends, including Rusty McDonald and Ray Lohman.

A celebration of life with family and friends will be Sunday, Jan. 28 at the White Lake Eagles (1204 S. Lake St., Whitehall, Michigan) from 1-4 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the family to help cover expenses.
