Joe and Fredna Lindsey of Idlewild, Michigan were born in Mississippi. Joe was born the last of eight children to William H and Deloris (Kelly) Lindsey. Fredna was born the first of ten children to Mozel and Arsola (McShann) Armstrong. Joe and Fredna were married July 15, 1956, in Mississippi and moved shortly thereafter to Cincinnati, Ohio. They would eventually move to Saginaw, Michigan before spending the next 60 years in Idlewild, Michigan.
Affectionately referred to as the Godparents of Idlewild, Joe and Fredna were pillars in the community and often could be found entertaining family and friends at their place on Paradise Lake. In addition, they owned and operated Blue Ribbon Cleaners in Ludington for more than 55 years retiring from the business in 2020. Fredna became an employee of the US Post Office in Idlewild in March 1968 and on June 18, 1977, became the Postmaster of the Idlewild Post Office. She retired after 33 years of service.
Joe and Fredna were founding members of the Lake County Merry Makers (Joe serving as President); members of the Idlewild Lot Owners Association. Joe was a member of the Detroit Idlewilders Club and also served as the Captain of the Yates Township Fire Department. Fredna was a member of the Idlewild Garden Housing Board and Secretary of the Idlewild Library Board.
They leave to cherish their memory: Children, Melba (David) Newsome, Phyllis (Mahdi) Tate, Letha Lindsey and Eric J. Lindsey; Grandchildren: Elliott and LJ Lindsey; James and JaMel White; Marcus, James and Erica Tate; Richard Lindsey and Kanesha Wison; many great, great-great and great-great-great grandchildren; Fredna's siblings: Doris Holmes, Joyce Ashley, Ralph Coleman, Lorraine Ward, Wayne Coleman, Victor Coleman and Rosetta Barnes; nieces, nephews and cousins; close friends and community members.
They were proceeded in death by both of their parents; their sons, Joe, Jr. and Reggie; Joe's siblings: William H. Jr., Beatrice, Addie B., Jimmy, Wesley C., William P.; Fredna's siblings: Loretta Adams-Ashby and Louis Coleman, Jr.
The life of Joe and Fredna will be celebrated by family and friends on Saturday, December 6, 2025, at Reed City High School, 225 W Church Avenue, Reed City, Michigan. Family will greet friends at 11:30 AM with the service following at 12 Noon. The Reverend Denise Suttles of Christ Community Church will officiate the service.
