Fredrick "Fred" Woodrow Day, 85

Fredrick "Fred" Woodrow Day, 85, of Kingston, ID, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully at his home on November 10, 2025. Fred was born on January 8, 1940, in Wallace, ID, a son of the late Thomas and Jane (Harris) Day.

Fred attended local schools and graduated from Kellogg High School, Class of 1960. After graduation, he moved to Los Angeles, CA where he got a job parking cars for all the swanky restaurants and cocktail bars on Hollywood Boulevard for the stars. In December of 1960 he enlisted in the US Army serving three years in Company C 547th Engineer BN., located in Darmstadt, Germany, as a field cook. From this experience, he learned the fine art of making mayonnaise from scratch, which he stated earned him the rank of Spec. 5. He also attempted to teach his wife, Kay, his mayonnaise recipe and jazz up her cooking, which led to spirited conversations in the kitchen. After he was honorably discharged in 1963, he moved back to the Silver Valley and started working in the local mines. Fred married Sharon Kay Howe on December, 29thh 1966 in Pinehurst, ID, after wooing her at the Happy Landing Bar during Frontier Days. Kay and him raised 5 boys living in Bauman's Addition in Kingston, ID, where they enjoyed camping, traveling around the US in their motorhome and going up the river.

For many years, Fred worked as a miner working at the Page, Coeur, Galena, and Bunker Mines. Fred retired from the Galena Mine in 2002 after working 35 years as a shaft repairman/cager. Fred was heavily involved in the local sports, where he enjoyed coaching and being a referee for the youth of the Silver Valley for many, many years. He also really enjoyed umping for the softball beer leagues in the summertime. Fred was a diehard Dodgers fan; he was able to watch them win the World Series before his passing. Fred loved a good game of poker, he carried a sock full of coins everywhere with him and was seen in a lot of back rooms in local bars, until they were shut down in 1991. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 1675. Fred never met a stranger. Wherever he traveled with his family, he would run into someone he knew. Whether it was an airport in Germany, a cruise ship in Alaska or the Fisherman's Warf in San Francisco. He loved being a grandpa and was very proud of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His family will forever miss his sense of humor.

In addition to his parents, Fred is preceded in death by his sister Polly.

Survivors include his loving wife of almost 59 years, Kay Day of the family home in Kingston, ID; children: Randy Howe of Pinehurst, ID. Dan Howe (Shonna) of Pinehurst, ID. Tim Day (Julie) of Cataldo, ID. Kevin Day (Leenie) of Kingston, ID and Doug Day (Jackie) of Cheney, WA. 11 grandchildren; Terri, Jordan, Tacey, Haylee, Meghan, Dani, Gary, Chris, Gage, Tucker, Cooper and numerous great-grandchildren.

At Fred's request, no formal services are planned and a celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
