Charles C. Barham

RUSTON, LA - Charles C. Barham passed away peacefully with his family at his side on Monday, May 3, 2010. Charlie was born in Ruston, Louisiana on April 20th 1934 to the late Lt. Gov. C. E. "Cap" and Carice Hilburn Barham. He was also preceded in death by an infant daughter and his brother Robert Barham. The family will receive family and friends from 12:00pm to 2:00pm on Thursday, May 6th at Trinity United Methodist Church with funeral services immediately following at 2:00pm, Rev. Ray Branton officiating. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Ruston, Louisiana under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston.

Charlie was a graduate of Ruston High School in 1952. Charlie was a proud member of the 1951 Ruston High School State Championship football team where he was an All-District, All-State and All-American running back playing for legendary Coach Hoss Garrett. Charlie received his B.A from Louisiana Tech University in 1958 and his J.D. from Louisiana State University in 1959.

Upon graduation from law school, Charlie pursued a career in law and practiced for over 39 years in Ruston, Louisiana. His most rewarding accomplishments came while serving the great people in the 35th District of Louisiana as their state senator. During his 20 years of legislative service, Charlie was a leader and was elected to, served and chaired numerous committees. In 2009, Charlie was recognized as distinguished alumni by the Ruston High School Alumni Association for his legislative service. Charlie served under Governors John McKeithen, Edwin Edwards and Dave Treen. From 1998 to 2001, Charlie served as Executive Director of the Louisiana Casino Association.

Charlie is survived by his wife of 55 years JoAnn Frasier Barham, daughters Karla Barham, Lori and husband Gary Sharp, son Charles C. Barham and wife Debi Shields Barham all of Shreveport. He was especially proud of his grandchildren, Abbie Sharp, Taylor Barham, Matt Sharp, Ryan Barham and Charlie Barham.

Pallbearer will be : Jimmy Ball, Dr. Billy Wilder, Jimmy Hoogland, Joe Mitchell Richardson, Mabus Walters, Charlie Salley, Danny Tatum, Payton Covington, Russell Woodard and Tommy Adkins.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the following people that helped Charlie throughout his illness. The staff at Grace Home, Johnetta Perkins and Margaret Gill.

In lieu of flowers the family request donation to Broadmoor United Methodist Church, Trinity United Methodist Church, Methodist Children's home of Ruston or the charity of your choice. Kilpatrick Funeral Home

Charlie was always an inspiration to me. He was always joyful, positive, and willing to help. I enjoyed his friendship while he & I were members of the Senate, and also during the time I was campaigning for attorney general. He was a great man
