Dr. Charles Morgan Poole

CELEBRATION, FL - Dr. Charles Morgan Poole of Celebration, Florida - minister, professor, faithful husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather - draws to a close his life of Christian service, study and influence. On January 15th ,2010, his voice on earth was silenced but his impact on his family, students and friends (professional and private alike) continues to speak on.

Born in Abilene, TX on June 3, 1921, Charles, known as Morgan, graduated from Harding College (Searcy, AR) with his first BA in August of 1940. Dr. Poole was a WWII veteran of the Navy where he served as an instructor on the new Corsair aircraft. During his time he met and married his wife of 68 years - Alma Geraldine Abernathy of Nashville, TN. After the war, he obtained his MA from the George Peabody College for Teachers (Nashville, TN) in August of 1950. His endeavors in education and ministry would be his life's work for the next 6 decades. Dr. Poole established Brentwood Christian Church in Nashville, TN in 1952 and Madison Christian Church in Madison, TN in 1958. When he received his Bachelor of Divinity from Texas Christian University in 1965, he was ordained as a Disciples of Christ minister and went on to serve in several churches throughout Arkansas, Texas, and Louisiana. After accepting the call to ministry at the First Christian Church of Bossier, he and his wife moved their family to the Shreveport/Bossier City area of Louisiana where they made their home until 2007. His final postgraduate degree, the Doctor of Education, was completed from Northeast Louisiana University in December of 1976. Shortly thereafter he established Sentry Schools with two locations in Shreveport and Monroe for children with learning disabilities, and became a full tenured professor at Louisiana Tech Barksdale where he taught English and Philosophy for 30 years. He was often sought after by the Air Force for his technical writing expertise and completed many such works used in the training of military personnel. He was a member of Phi Delta Kappa since 1976. His final position at the end of his long, distinguished career in Christian service was teaching the senior men's Bible class at the First Baptist Church of Shreveport. Both he and his wife were blessed to have fellowship for many years with dear friends at First Baptist Church. In 2008, Dr and Mrs. Poole relocated to Celebration, FL to be close their daughter, Miriam Brown, and her family.

Of all of the blessings and experiences in his life, none were greater to Morgan than his family. Indeed, all children were welcome in his presence and would find themselves sore from laughter and smiles. He truly found joy in the presence of children. He is survived by his wife Geraldine Poole of Celebration and his three children - Daniel Poole of Wichita, KS, Miriam Brown of Celebration, and Charles Paul Poole of Fort Worth, TX - along with four granddaughters and seven great-grandchildren. Dear Paul (and Dan, Miriam and Mrs. Poole):

Last night, my dad called me to tell me the news of Dr. Poole's death. I am truly saddened to learn the news. My memories of him are always of pleasant and happy conversations. It is, indeed, a great honor to have known him as well as each of you.

Paul, for some reason, I especially remember the time you and I drove late one night (all night) to turn in his doctoral thesis to the professor's home. We put it in the screen door; remember? Your dad was so appreciative and you were awesome to do that for him.

Helen and I are praying for all of you. She sends her sympathies, as well.

Blessings to you all as you honor him and the gift of his life,

For the Commander, Carroll R. Michaud

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to Charles Morgan Poole our “Brother-in-Arms”. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Morgan. And to Morgan it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the devoted and selfless service he rendered to his country during WW-II while serving in the U.S. Navy. Morgan, we bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at Ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,341 members of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Morgan’s family and loved ones.
