Earl "Coach" Hamner

Graveside services for Coach Hamner will be held at time 1:00 p.m. on Monday, January 11, 2016 in the Gardens of Memory Cemetery, Minden, LA. Officiating will be Paul Rasmussen a former player, of Highland Park Methodist Church in Dallas, TX. The family requests casual attire only.

Coach Hamner retired after 37 years, having coached at Cotton Valley, C.E. Byrd High School, and Southfield School in Shreveport. His greatest joy was to see his students and athletes become stellar members in the community and in the business world. In 2011, Coach Hamner was inducted into the Southfield School Hall of Fame.

Coach Hamner was preceded in death by his parents, Hardy and Edna Hamner; his devoted wife of 40 years, Patricia Heflin Hamner; brother, Buel Hamner and sister-in-law, Norma Miller Hamner. He is survived by a daughter, Lesa Lyons, and grandsons, Alexander Lyons, Jr. and Nicholas Lyons.

Honoring Coach Hamner as pallbearers will be Donald Allen, Chris Tilley, James Moreland, Richy Akeroyd, Chuck Stripling, Bob Bray, and Tim Kochakian. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Steve McDowell, Doug Robinson, Phillip Johnson, Skipper Morgan, and Merrill Wautlet.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Dr. Ted Warren, Dr. Sanjeevi Tivakaran, and his secretary Mary for all their compassion and care.

The family suggests donations may be made to St. Jude Childrens Hospital or to the American Diabetes Association in honor of Nicholas Lyons.

I well never forget this sweet man!!! He always had a smile, kind word and loving heart! His students adored him (I know mine kids did while at Southfield!). Coach always had a big hug for them! God Bless you Lesa! He will be missed by many and may you be lifted by all those beautiful memories.

I loved Coach Hamner ... he coached us in tennis in the summer at the old courts at Byrd, and of course was such a great teacher/coach when I was a student at Byrd. God bless you, Lesa...you are in my prayers.

Being a CRAZY Senior at Byrd, (class '72)my last day of school, I was taken to the Principals office to be informed that I would not graduate for my transgressions....squirting an underclassman w/ vinegar from a "squirtgun"....Coach personally came in the office and reprimanded the "Principle" on how I was an upstanding citizen and said that "this is what Seniors do"...He asked for my records and had serious doubts that I had even been suspended, ever...case closed, Coach Hamner had me to my 1st period class 3 minutes early...loved this big oooh lovable lug of a man...Tommy Adams

Coach Hamner was the best coach I ever had, and helped me in ways far beyond baseball at Byrd. My most sincere regards to his loved ones. His place in Heaven will no doubt reflect how special he was to so many of us here on earth, as our Good Lord knows.
