My Aunt Gwen was a true southern belle. Gracing the cover of Vogue magazine and her southern accent will never leave my mind. Married to my mothers brother Clinton J. Murphy I spent many an hour at their home on Sappington Rd. My uncle Clint and Gwen were always interested in whatever I was doing. I remember taking a college art class and took my schoolbook over to their house to discuss "the masters". In discussing one of the artist I talked about Titian. Not knowing any better I was pronouncing the name titan they never corrected me. I came back about a week later and told them I was pronouncing the name wrong. Aunt Gwen just smiled at me and said in her southern voice " we knew sugar".

Years go by my visits stopped. My Uncle Clint had passed away and I would drive by thinking I need to stop by. I never did. I attended her funeral at Jefferson Barracks and the thundering thought that she was the last of the Murphy's. They were all gone and gone too soon. I have tried in my own way to keep the Murphy name still alive. I named my oldest son Charles Murphy Kastner as a tribute to my dear cousin who died in 1969. My youngest son Paul J. Kastner named his son Abraham Murphy Kastner.

My dear Aunt Gwen and her art work(clowns) will also live with me as long as I breathe. RIP Aunt Gwen.

Please accept my deepest sympathies.

My mother, Mary Dowling Victor, used to speak of Gwen when we talked about the family. I would always think of her as I would frequently pass by the mailbox on Sappington Rd.

Once, Patty Kastner and I worked together, and I became acquainted with Colleen. I remember Paul K. from the "pool."

Although I never met Gwen, I certainly felt she was part of my family; however, I never did figure out how closely related she and my mother were. You know the Dowlings; it doesn't matter. Everyone is family!

It was my honor, as the Department Service Officer of The American Legion, to assist Mrs. Murphy with VA Benefits. She was generous with her encouragement and praise. I will miss her.

To the Friends and Family of Gwen Murphy. We were long distance friends for many years. I served with her son, Clinton at Ft. Benning, GA. I made visits to Clint from California and always loved talking to his mother. A fine, true lady of utmost character. She will be missed by me and the soldiers she dearly loved as she did this nation. This woman made the ultimate sacrifice of her two sons from Viet Nam in 1969 and Clinton from Agent Orange complications in 2003. Her husband spent time as a POW during WWII. She deserves the love and respect of a grateful nation and we are forever indebted to her for her family's sacrifices. A mass will be said in her honor and the men of the family by Monsignor, Chaplain and Retired U. S. Army Colonel Michael Chilen in Hanceville, AL on 22 August 2007. Hanceville is a Catholic Shrine for the Eternal Word Television Network. We will always love you!
