Harvey VanBrocklyn Obituary

SFC Harvey S. VanBrocklyn (US Army Ret.)

SHREVEPORT, LA- The service celebrating the home going for Harvey S. VanBrocklyn, 77, of Shreveport, Louisiana, will be held at 10 am on Thursday, October 11, 2007, at Northview Assembly of God, Shreveport, Louisiana. Officiating will be the Reverends Don Parmely and Randle Peterson. Interment will follow in Hill Crest Memorial Park Cemetery, Haughton, Louisiana. The family will receive friends for visitation on Wednesday, October 10, 2007, from 6 pm until 8 pm at Hill Crest Funeral Home.

Mr. VanBrocklyn was born on January 8, 1930, in Newport, Rhode Island, and lived in Shreveport for 31 years. On Sunday, October 7, 2007, after a lengthy illness and with his family by his side, he entered the throne room of God, where there was much rejoicing in heaven upon his arrival.

Mr. VanBrocklyn proudly served his country in the United States Army for over 20 years, retiring in 1976. He served in the Korean conflict and was wounded in battle in Viet Nam, for which he earned a Purple Heart. He was a lifetime member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart.

He enjoyed playing golf whenever he could, which wasn't often enough according to him. He took great pride in his family and enjoyed all the little things that make life worth living.

Mr. VanBrocklyn was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey Sylvester VanBrocklyn, Sr. and Mary Louise VanBrocklyn; three brothers, Robert VanBrocklyn, Rodman VanBrocklyn and his infant twin brother.

He leaves behind the love of his life for 55 years, Joyce VanBrocklyn; one daughter, Karen Nennig and husband, Chuck of Mary Esther, Florida; one son, Gary VanBrocklyn of Honolulu, Hawaii; two grandchildren, Jeremy Nennig and wife, Lindsey and Sarah Nennig; one great-grandson, Wade Nennig; very special nieces and nephews; and a host of church family and friends.

Honoring Mr. VanBrocklyn as pallbearers are four of his nephews, Jamy Dzvonick, Greg Dzvonick, Tim Hutches, and Chuck Scroggins; Michael Stark, a Purple Heart member and golfing buddy; and Dusty Warren, church youth pastor.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Military Order of the Purple Heart. Mr. VanBrocklyn will receive the full military honors he has earned serving his country with pride and honor.

The family would especially like to thank the wonderful staff of nurses at Cornerstone Hospital in Bossier City for their compassionate care of Mr. VanBrocklyn during his hospitalization. Hill Crest Memorial Funeral

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to Harvey S. VanBrocklyn our Brother in Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Harvey. And to Harvey it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the devoted and selfless service he rendered to his country during the Korean and Vietnam Wars while serving in the U.S. Army. Harvey we bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at Ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,355 members of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Harvey’s family and loved ones.
